Ok where to begin ??

First off i started a forum which is being bombarded with spammers ..... i was advised to install spam o matic which supported by stopforumspam/com and it took quite a few questions to find the correct download link but eventually i got there. Then at the vbulletin cms admin i tried to upload the files via the upload section

Turns out after days of trying to find this thing it does not get installed that way i have been informed ...via the stopforumspam.com people

Sin an amtempt to try and get things started i downloaded filezilla 3.5.1 (server) So Far So good

Then when click run as administrator i am prompted to put in my ip address which i looked up and are also 100% is correct

But the message i get every time i try to use filezilla it will not connect to the server

Now i am doing my head in enough trying to learn how to run the forum and trying to stop all the spam but why is filezilla not working ??

There is a section for port displayed and i am thinking perhaps this is where the problems lies although i have absolutely no idea how to find the number (the number is 14147 but i think this is an example only) when the dialogue box opens up to connect

My head hurts from trying stuff i am not too good at

perhaps there is a better ftp provider or maybe i need to know the port number > if so how do i find it

many thanks for any suggestions or imput

Have you contacted your web host to verify your FTP connection settings are correct?

With most hosts, standard FTP is port 21. If you cannot connect using port 21, you should contact your host to find out which port you need to use.

Also, if you are using cPanel, your FTP username and password is typically the same as your cPanel username and password.

Also, you mentioned you downloaded FileZilla server. You need the client, not the server version.

I'm thinking you need to install the client, not the server version on your local machine. It should then connect you to the FTP program running on the server you want to FTP your files to.

I dont think i am getting that far , the opening window from fiezilla will not connect at this point it is trying to connect to my computer as far as i can work out , just a ip address i really dont think it is seeking an assigned area form a host ......just a general logon from my home ??

I did look at a few videos on youtube and they indicated to download the sever file ??

You need to install the FileZilla client, not server:

the server software is what your host uses.

The CLIENT software is what you use to connect to your host.

You need the client, not the server.

I am half way through my first ftp and i am wondering if when dragging over the zipfile to the site files if i should be unzipping it ?

The instructuctions i am following via another site say these files over right the existing files ...... should i assume once i have dragged them in to the website files the job is done ??

It's quite exciting to think i may actually do this

Somehow i have managed to make all the zip files word documents and now they will not open .......any ideas how restore the setting for downloads ??

i was going ok i thought and now i am up the creek without a paddle

I am having trouble following exactly what you did.

I think you had zipped files on your local hard drive that you FTP'd up to the server. Somehow those are now showing on the server as Word Documents?

What kind of files were inside the zip folders originally?

You can't just make one file become another.

Three things may have happened (or something else :) ):

1) Binary transferred as Ascii/Text

If you used Filezilla it should have transfer option of "Auto" vs "Binary or Text/Ascii" as the default and it will transfer it as a binary. Unlikely.

2) You lost the "zip" extension and the program that you are looking at assumes no extension is a "doc" file. That or you have the wrong association/icon setup. on a real machine the extension doesn't matter - the file is what the file is - however, Windows and Linux is following suit it seems, the extension is increasingly relevant. This means that the wrong extension confuses the crap out of everything even though the file is the same.

3) Something that no one has ever had happen before :)

If you are trying to overlay something the best way to do it imho is to upload the Zip first. Then in CPanel File Manager (or even via shell or whatever file access you have)
make a copy of the highest level directory you are altering. Then unzip the file.

FTP clients don't unzip files on the server.

I recommend the zip because it seems Filezilla opens and closes connections on each file and its horribly inefficient for large volume / small size files.

What happens if you put "Don't Hide extensions" on the view? Or you can probably right click and look at properties. I'm on a mac :)
