FTP backup, 1st make gzip then download,how?

I want to download my daily ftp backup, but without cpanel or ssl. Just throught ftp. Make gzip and then download.

Something similar to mysqldumper but for files.

The FTP server has to have GZIP support...beyond that just use an FTP client that supports GZIPing. Another option is to use a cron job to zip the files and use a scheduler-enabled ftp client to get the files.

my server supports GZIP. Im using FlashFXP to download ftp files, but i dont see GZip anywhere, can you suggest me a good ftp client?

I use filezilla. It's free, opensource, available over at sourceforge.

Gzip is a compression utility...not an FTP client. Let's not try to confuse him.

You have to do it in 2 steps. Download the file through FTP. I would use FileZilla for that. And then use your favorite zip program to compress the files.

Is it possible to extract a archive in the server using FTP program? I tried CuteFTP. But failed to do so.
