Hey guys,

I'm a newbie looking to invest in a few domains but I have not been able to hand reg anything worth $$$. I always hear how people hand reg domains and flip them for thousands.

I am kinda all over the place looking for domain hacks or brandable domains. What do you suggest someone new to domain investing focus on.

I have also been looking at the GD bargain domains hoping to find a nice 5 letter domain. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

The best way to find a 'hand reg' domain is to get in early on a new trend or social happening, like Virtual Reality or Wearables (now WAY too late for anything in these) etc., and to try to get the best one(s) before they're snapped up. To think you're going to find any good/worthwhile 'hand regs' at this stage of the game is like trying to find a very very small needle in a very very big haystack!

Look at the sales reports/blogs of what is selling weekly, and start looking for similar types of names on the aftermarket to purchase. And yes, you're going to have to spend more than 'reg fee' (if that is your desired/hopeful budget), but that's just the way things are now if you want to make money in domaining at this stage of the game.

Have fun!

hawkeye, thanks for the great advice. I have been recently keeping my eye on some trends like you mentioned. I think that's the only way for me to get in cheap and turn a good profit in the future.

I have been watching Flippa and saw some interesting domains replaced with a different letter in the spelling. I'm not sure if those are good to try and find?

I notice all the rage with LLLL.com and chips, whatever that means. Lots of different trends out there. I'm staying away from the Chinese trend because I have no clue what I'm doing.

The fact that you know it is hard to hand reg a sellable domain name means you are advanced for a 'newbie'.

Dont concentrate on "thousands" and instead concentrate on just getting some sales at any reasonable price.

Also remember there are parts of domaining that runs on snail time.

Yes, I have bought some losers and quickly learned it's not as easy as it looks. I think many people like myself looked at the domain auctions and thought I can do maybe do that to. I found out quickly there always seems be someone ten steps ahead of you that already had the same idea to reg that trend or name.

I did get lucky once and reg aud.io not knowing it sold for $6k in the past and Deleted it because I thought it was worthless. I was so mad at myself.

Really ? Where ? :D It doesn't happen that often you know.

There are many possible niches, the best is to look at what sells then find your own comfort zone.

II have also been looking at the GD bargain domains hoping to find a nice 5 letter domain. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!
Why a 5-letter domain in particular ? Not saying it's a bad idea but what is the thought process ? There are many ways to skin a cat, so I wouldn't fixate on one particular type of domain.
What are you doing wrong ? I would say nothing, everybody is struggling and you've said it yourself if it was easy everybody would be doing it.

PS: I see that you've been a member for two years but you define yourself as newbie. My guess is you haven't been dedicated at all. For the majority of domainers, it is a hobby but it has to be treated like a business if you want to see some chance of a return. As simple as that. Successful domainers are workaholics, they spend a lot of time doing research, buying, selling, learning. It's not a something you do over lunchtime as a pastime.

And of course it is normal that you are not finding good handregs. It's not impossible but difficult. Good names are already registered. It takes money to make money...

I meant 5 letter brandable domains. Yes, I need to stay in a niche area because I am to all over the place and that's not good. My problem is knowing which niche area to focus on. I need to really figure out what niche area to concentrate on.

I have bought a lot of domains in the past 2 years learning and most were junk except for the one .io hack. I wish I started 10 years ago.

Chasing trends is exactly what some want you to do so you end up holding the bag.

As Kate said, don't fixate on one specific niche. The key is to put yourself in the position of an end user and determine what would be valuable if you were starting a project.

Here is my newbie formula:

Work the aftermarket auctions like GoDaddy and concentrate on short, .com, 1 or 2 words, product or service related. I always recommend filtering for age (5+ or more) to narrow your search and target names with 20 or more visits per month.

Find names you like and then only bid on ones where at least 2 others have bid. Bid late and don't spend more than $40 per name.

Now you have a name that you know 3 other people saw value in, 2 of those were probably domainers, and you are in at a price point where your downside is very limited and holding a domain where you could probably make a little or recoup your cost even selling here at NP.

List your domains for at least 40X cost at Godaddy premium, Sedo (buy now), Flippa, Afternic and wait for end user sales. I like parking at Bodis with a sales lander redirect to field additional offers.

Invest as much as you can budget in these types of names, and once you make a sale, you can take a small portion of your profit and play with hand regs and other trendy stuff.

Keep in mind that many of those who brag out in the open about such flips probably spent a shitload of money too on other domains that may never sell.
