After glancing through the "backorder worth it" thread", an interesting question popped into my head.

Where do domainers buy most of their domains from?

Are most of your domains bought through an auction platform (Sedo, Afternic, EBay etc)?

Or are the majority of your domains bought from private sellers?

Do you tap into private lists? Or do you buy most of your domains from domain resellers or web forums?

The follow up to this thread is a fairly obvious one. I will post it tomorrow, or leave it up to another member ;)

Poll included - please scroll UP

Cheers,
domaino

Another Fellow Scot. Hey ;)

The problem I find with Snapnames and the likes is that domains tend to go for prices way above what I feel they are worth. This is usually the result of a bidding war between two people, both intent on procuring the name AT ALL COSTS.

I have heard other domains remark about the same thing, so I don't believe my experiences with snapnames, namejet, pool etc are exclusive to me alone. I still use all of the aforementioned, but with less and less regularity.

Most of my names come from lists run through Domain Research Tool. There's a few lists I subscribe to via e-mail, dnxpert and dotsauce always have decent names. If I have extra money I try to win a premium from namejet.

Yeah, competition is fierce

some of the prices they go for seem crazy if its just for parking reasons....some of them would take many decades to pay for themself.

I don't buy as many now but I still love to hunt :)

I think that's what keeps people coming back to this industry, it's certainly one of the reasons I enjoy domaining so much.

There's always bargains to be had. Take Sedo for example. Looking through the featured listings today and I came across something of a bargain:

a 3 letter .com going for 1000 EUROS.

Unfortunately for me, the domain had already been sold two weeks prior to my enquiry but for some reason ended up back on the featured listings page (or at least that is what sedo is telling me). Or even look at the portfolio of domains listed on namebio.com a week or so ago, LLL.coms being snapped up for $600 a piece. Now a lot of these pick-ups are a matter of luck, but some are a product of research and just being "in the know."

Moral of the story: there is room for everyone in this business to make a profit, be it large or small ;)

But was it real ?

You can't beleive everything you see on sedo unfortunately, Sedo are still accepting offers on www.atlantis.com and have been for well over a year.

Archives.org show that Kerzner International Resorts have owned it since Sep 29, 2000 so I very much doubt they are really interested in selling it ;)

....sometimes the names have probably been sold years ago and never removed from Sedo....and some are just fake.

Go daddy, but its whole registration process is quite buggy these days, sometimes its very slow.

I get more satisfaction from selling domain names registered at reg fee.
So, extensive research is necessary. :)

Iam using mostly auction sites and private sales, because many here at NP have personal websites with domain names for a sale, Iam too, so take a look, you are always welcome.
