Frank has been quoted saying that in 20 years “.Com will become like AM radio”

Rick has been saying for a long time that most GTLDs will be DOA and that .Com will increase in value.

What do you say? Who is making more sense? Rick or Frank?

registrars and gtld Frank;s businesses are all revolving around ways to milk the suckers (i was such a sucker too, i can see from that perspective well too)

Register.com sends me mails:

"upgrade mydomain.com (i own) to mydomain.net (available - to register from them)"

seriously? what kind of credibility they should have to advise businesses on domains when they tell you to upgrade your .com to their .net?????

then it will send the same crap 'upgrade' your .com to .whatever they want - legalized cybersquatting solicitations in essense as they are making money of your brand to profit and thus contact you in bad faith as lots of WIPO processes would confirm this. you see?

it's all about squatting the trademark holders and businesses so they would spend on defensive registrations.
that's the main interest behind all this new gtld businesses.

but of course it's all hidden under the sauce of a next "new" wonder on the internet. they do not solve any real problem, just adding more problems to the existing ones. they just want to solicit millions of .com businesses to buy their .niche 'upgrade' for fast dough.

Both sides have a valid point here. Technically, I would have to agree with Rick on this one. COM is king and it most likely always will be. This extension has been branded into everyone's head for more than a decade now and the other extensions will most likely make .COM only that much more desirable (at least here in the US). When you open your web browser and want a price on airfare would it be quicker to type in Southwest.com or Southwest.travel?

On the other hand, when we are talking about a time frame like 20 years it would be safe to assume allot of things will be different. Especially with how quickly technology moves! I don't think it's going to be these new extensions that will change the internet 20 years from now - It's going to be a gob of other things! As far as domain extensions go, .COM will still be at the top and many will lose money on all these new extensions (just what many big companies want)..But, technology and the internet in general will certainly be more different 20 years from now!

We won't know for sure until we know and that is why we should probably hedge our bets and get in the new GLTD game as well. The only problem is that I don't think you are going to make much money long term from buying and owning these extensions. The big money will be made from selling them and collecting reg fees and renewals. Frank knows this.

Agree with FPForum, .com will be king until we shift to a different paradigm. Just think of what kind of devices you would even use to access the Internet even 10 years.

Prominent futurists, including Ray Kurzweil the director of engineering at Google, are predicting that in 20 years, technology will be completely integrated in our bodies in the form of 1,000s of machines (each with the power of a smartphone) the size of red blood cells flowing through our bodies. You think .com will exist then?

Here's a general video that talks about what the landscape will be like in that time period. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uIzS1uCOcE&list=PLvSsahSADGg3yogwpuWHy3Tu4T-_G4RJC"]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uIzS1uCOcE&list=PLvSsahSADGg3yogwpuWHy3Tu4T-_G4RJC[/ame]

Just another thought besides the fact that technology favors the .com now is that it is branded into everyone's head as was stated before. Plus I believe the .com is so powerfull that people are overlooking one thing here. The wheel was invented and the .com is very similar to this. The wheel still remains in existence today and is very important as is the .com. You can keep bringing out all the different tlds you want i mean will they have value. Sure. I mean companies wanna keep there brand in every extension they can. But will they replace the .com? Answer is no. The .com has too much popularity and everyone wants it. they want the .com and every other extension for branding as well.

I would just say to investors on here, be careful not to waste your money.

I've seen people trying to unload massive amount of ".co" which was touted as the "new" cool thing. If you are going to invest in these domains, be totally sure you know what you're doing.

If they and other domainer keep catching all good domain and then asking for high price it can kill .com too.

many startup can not afford the high price of the domain and try to find alternative. if many of them using non .com domain and success it can affect .com price in long term

Keep in mind also that people who tend to be of influence in an industry having the tendency to bring up the hype of things to sell what they got even though in reality it wont last long. Don't put it past eoither one of these guys to stir up some dust for a few dollars in there pockets.

One of the keys to understanding this post is that Franks talking about companys buying and using their own extension. Sale.Walmart Gas.Shell Drink.Coke (just wild examples)

Rick talking about the loads of 'generic' GTLDs meant to sell to others (domains and small business enduser) Even Rick would probably agree someing like dot music and dot web will be successful.

Where they both agree is that dot com will remain the strongest TLD

100% Correct!

I say: this is unimportant.
The future is in the ccTLDs (outside the US).

Agree...especially in native languages where the average Joe doesn't read or speak English.

And is will mostly happen on smartphones the 'new' computer of the future as SF prices drop down and down.
