For the newbies and not only get this candy : WHOIS in your PC

Hi, I`m into domains from a few years and I know one of the worst things to happen is to see your queries recordered....I just had one with a ccTDld and am furious so I remembered I should NEVER use Registrars` Whois services but always my own or the specific registry one for each extension.

Because some Registrars store your whois queries to play dirty (in case you don`t register the domain immediately, they may to test its traffic if any or try to sell it to you later under fake names...)

so here you go:

1) download the little exe file - don`t worry its not a virus but if you are paranoid then scan it with an antivirus before to execute it :) - from:

Whois

2) place the whois app in the c:\windows directory

3) start> run> cmd> whois namepros.com

and you are set to enjoy your own whois service and works with several extensions!

If you like it, don`t forget to rep me :)

If it doesn't work with a particular extension, I believe you can give it the whois server for that extension as a second argument. For example if it doesn't by default handle .mobi, try this:

whois whateverthedomainis.mobi whois.dotmobiregistry.net

You should be able to find the whois server name on the parent registry site.

Another option for local whois lookups on windows is to run the command-line whois client under cygwin. Not quite as easy as the one ItalianDragon mentioned, but it also emulates lot of other handy Linux utilities. I've been using that one for years and have developed several bash scripts around it, like multi-extension availability lookups. I'm not a windows scripter, but if you are you could do the same with the sysinternals whois client.

Hi mate, I`m not a scripter either but will look into it as soon as I complete a few hundreds :bingo: things to do. Need to try that trick too for the other extensions.

Cheers
