Hi everyone, I'm new to the domaining world and completely fascinated by it. I've been reading a lot of material for about 2 weeks now and decided I should experiment by buying at least one domain and going from there. So, visitvan.com is my first domain purchase ever; the Van refers to Vancouver in case anyone was wondering. Appraisals please?? Please tell me it's above reg fee!! Thanks a lot everyone.

I should mention that I hand-regged this site at GoDaddy and right now, it's parked by default with them.

Welcome fh08

Firstly, you are doing the right thing by reading, but you can never do to much reading on these forums, there are some very clued-up and knowledgeable domainers on this site who are only too happy to help. I have learnt a lot from them during my time on NP.

Certainly dont gety an idea and think "WOW' thats it and go buy 30 domains relating to it, pick 1 or 2 and come and put it in the appraisal section here and get a feel for what is good and whats not.

A couple of things I learnt on my travels

Try and avoid made up words (Slushop, Texena etc) unless you see it being easy branded or have a develoment plan for it.

Stay away from hypens and numbers (Building-Sites.com or FromMe2You.com) - They are hard to sell.

Try and stay away from anything longer than 2 words (HerbalPlantGrowers.com) or any domains that are too long and may be difficult to spell.

When you get 2-word domains, make sure the keywords go well together and make sense

CheapFlights.com - GOOD
StockBrokers.com - GOOD

ComputerPaper.com - BAD
MetalDecorator.com BAD

On VisitVan, most people wont know what the "VAN" stands for, unless you tell them, to start with, try and pick names are are obvious to someone who has never spoken to you. If you like that sort of domain, there are plenty of Visit<Cityname>.com domains still available to reg.

A VAN to me is a vehicle, not Vancouver the city.

Also remember that if you have to explain to people what it means, its usually not a good choice.

Certainly not bad for a first go, go and read a lot in the newbie section, some really good advice on there

I hope this helps and good luck

Hello Fh08 and welcome to NP. I have been out of the domain market for a while but recently just got back in. I do have to agree with gilescoley, because when I read your post I thought of VAN (vehicle) as well, and then when you explained it I was like oh okay, and that is usually not a good idea when it comes to selling domain. Hope this helps, but dont let this criticisms bother you. We are only here to put our 2 cents because we want you to succeed. Trust me I have gotten some too. lol
Good luck in this venture though, and remember we always here to help.

If you have to explain name than it's not a good name.

Yeah, Van would be something that's immediately understandable only to Canadians I guess, oh well, thanks a lot for the input guys!!

stick with something you're passionate about.
If you're from Vancouver, then visitVAN.com is good.
The domain is not that great, but you can develop it into a nice site.

If I develop the site as a Vancouver-related tourism site, can I hope to sell it to Vancouver tourism SMEs?

I'm going to disagree with most and say for a first domain, this is a really good one.

I don't see the resell value on the domain alone, but with development, people will easily understand what the Van stands for as it's not stretching it.

Also, this is directed at gilescoley, imho, ComputerPaper.com is a very good domain!

that is very encouraging to hear! Given that I'm pretty clueless about web development, I'm going to do a bit of self-learning and/or outsourcing and definitely develop the website. I ultimately hope to sell it though...

Regging .com for resale will be very hard. I would investigate other
tlds even though some people around here knock them. If you're
stuck on .com then buying aftermarket is your best bet!

I completely disagree.

However, for someone who is NEW to domaining, this is the best bet (the aftermarket part, NOT the other extension part).

Indeed FH is new to domaining :)

FH is not a developer and wants to flip domains. I've seen
nice sums of money made from other exts besides .com.
Obviously they are not for everyone and should thoroughly
be researched before purchasing!

Bindergang, oh well you better reg them, the .org, biz, info, TV are all available

ComputerPaper.com (not site, not parked)

I personally dont like the name, PrinterPaper maybe, but "Computer Paper" doesnt make sense to me??

Just opinions i guess, Good luck fh08
