I've posted and made comments about this for years. I've been privy to more than one group attempting the development of a 'new' search engine. They all fell or short of their goals for one reason or another.

Now AI is going to make a run at the top dog. Surely, the team at Google have been working on the same thing. Going to be interesting to watch how things shake out.

Will a dethroning take place?

OpenAI Is Launching Search Engine, Taking Direct Aim at Google

OpenAI is launching a test version of its long-awaited search engine, which it says will cite sources of information including news from business partners such as The Wall Street Journal parent News Corp and the Atlantic magazine.

The tool, called SearchGPT, will summarize the information found on websites, including news sites, and let users ask follow-up questions, just as they can currently with OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT. The sources are linked at the end of each answer in parentheses.

OpenAI also built a sidebar where it said users can see more results and sources with relevant information.

SearchGPT is OpenAI’s most direct challenge yet to Google’s dominance in search since the release of ChatGPT in 2022 caught the tech company flat-footed. Google this year widely rolled out its own AI search feature that synthesizes information from multiple web sources. Shares in Google-parent Alphabet fell by nearly 3% Thursday. more...

Requires login, lol. Good luck with that. Anyway it will probably be as useless as current google ai-powered results.

Any idea who the seller was/is?

Posted yesterday

...But then it looks like afternic nameservers went up on or around January 17th. So it's likely it was purchased by an investor at namecheap.

... Then in March 2024 the WHOIS was updated.

... And now it redirects to a searchgpt wait-list page.

Which begs the questions, was there another sale after the January 2024 sale? Did Open Ai buy it? If so For how much and from who?

Yes, it will go nowhere (as far as being a real competitor to google) if log in is required.

Once it's ready for the public, it'll probably work the same as ChatGPT.com where a slightly inferior search that is sufficient for almost everyone (e.g., 4o mini) will be available without logging in, and then a superior search (e.g., 4o or 4) will be for logged-in members who pay.

Good. Put Google out of business. They've abused their power and put investors over users. Also they're biased, favoring big corporations over small businesses. And they play politics with their search results as well.

IMO.

Google (Alphabet) is not going out of business anytime soon. They had $73 billion in net income last year and they'll probably continue to report similar or better figures for decades (at least).

It's true that Google is far from perfect. But no search engine can be truly unbiased and please everyone.

In other search engine related news I found something interesting. Going to give it a try later today. (ADD: it seems only demo version is available...not sure about costs. Litigation attorneys will likely love this product).

"Meet WebXray, a Search Engine That Tells You How You’re Being Tracked Online

The new tool from a former Google engineer is designed to supercharge privacy violation lawsuits.

Every moment you spend online, you’re being tracked. Google, Facebook, Amazon, and hundreds of other websites are cataloging every search term, mouse click, and website visit. It can be hard for the average person to wrap their head around. A lot of it’s legal, but some of it isn’t and if you don’t know what you’re looking for it can be hard to parse the scale and illegality of the data companies are collecting on you.

WebXray, a new tool made by a former Google Engineer, wants to make it easier.

WebXray is a search engine that anyone can use to see how, specifically, websites are tracking you. A normal user can enter a text string, like “cancer” or “pregnancy,” then see which websites are tracking that specific search, using which cookies, and what those cookies are for."

Not forget that any new search engine can become same as Google, it takes hones people to make it true private for people.
I think i have it combined with my secret truth info we can Kill not only Google but any corporation, but I did not find anyone to join me, so we take all the best domains until Google does not know so they make rebrand to those domains.
Why people are so naive this days?
Sometimes I think that I deal with AI people not real humans.

@Bravo Mod Team

will it only work if set as default browser?

"Once ChatGPT has been set as your default search engine, you can search directly via your browser URL bar."
