Melchor Montoya who is being nailed to the cross for the 12th times grimaces in pain as a nail is driven into his palm during his reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday, April 6, 2007 at Santa Lucia village, San Fernando town in Pampanga province north of Manila. Filipino devotees practiced the yearly religious penitence as part of the observance of the Lenten season wherein they inflicted injuries on themselves on the belief that it will atone them of their sins and their wishes will be granted. If he was previously nailed 12 times to it, shouldn't he have permanent holes in his hands?

just curious.....

Cheers,

Ouch!

I presume that after each nailing, the hole heal before the following year's ordeal.

It's tradition in certain provinces in the Philippines that people volunteer to be nailed to the cross as some sort of penance for their yearly sins.

The traditions are different all around the world... Europeans would rather go on a pilgrimage than get nailed to a cross. :)

You are lucky :), but I don't think he keeps the nails there more than a few hours...
I know people who pierced their ears, yet some have had to re-pierce their ears because they didn't wear earrings for a while and the holes closed.

I stopped wearing earrings 20 years ago :) (but i have to admit, once i tried to wear them again after years, there was a little bit resistance in the holes)

Maybe he should just have a steel grommet installed there? Puncturing his hands with dirty looking nails every year seems inefficient if he just wants to be hung up like an xmas ornament.

this i watched from the tv, they put the nails (all 4 of them) in bottle filled with alcohol to sanitize them within 24 hours before the so-called event.
