March 19, 2008 (IDG News Service) The controversial 700-MHz spectrum auction has closed, raising $19.59 billion, a record for a spectrum auction in the U.S., the Federal Communications Commission said Tuesday.

The FCC, however, failed to sell off a swath of spectrum that was set aside for a public safety network. That block did not receive a bid that met the FCC's $1.3 billion reserve price. The agency is evaluating its options for the spectrum, it said.

The 700-MHz auction was the first to require anonymous bidding, and the FCC has not yet revealed which companies won the rights to the bands that were sold. While Google Inc. was instrumental in pushing the so-called open-access rules for the auction, it is still unknown if the search giant bid for or won any of the licenses.

No need for suspense .... Google didn't win anything -

That almost means that Google doesn't even want to play - as far as cash positions Google has more throwaway money than Verizon does, by far (Almost 4 times the cash position alone, and the debt multiples are drowning Verizon...).

Verizon... pfft. ;)

Well - Google did at least open the doors anyway , There was no open access to the auctions before. I know many people think Google has a monopoly over many online services already - But I think Verizon/AT&T have a pretty big one themselves (Not to mention I'm a huge fan of Google products myself). I was hoping the TISP was going to become reality :( http://www.google.com/tisp/ ;)
