AT&T paid 2.5 billion for a portion of the 700 MHz spectrum today. The rest of the spectrum is to be auctioned off in January 2008 and Google is a major contender.

What would the value of 700MHz.net be? :)

I would rather have the .net than the .com because it is a network. I also think that with the possibility of the new google phone that they would use this frequency for their network, rather than existing cell networks.

Opinions would greatly be appreciated, with reps added, if I have not rep'd you before.

Thanks.

First off, as a newbie, from all I've seen in the last couple weeks, I'd always want the .com first. Having said that though, I would think the .net would be second best and when you're looking at that much money, second best just may not be bad at all.

How would you market it to those big dogs though? Facing someone like that I'd fill like that little "small business owner" in the office with the corporate giants who are playing desktop football with me!

I don't know that I'd wait till they came knocking on my door though. Since you're .net, you need to try harder! They will probably go knocking on .com's door and not think of you until you tell them to think of you.

Whatever you do, good luck. I'm a newbie so don't feel comfortable giving an appriasal, but I'm betting it's a lot more then just reg fee!

TLD use to mean:
.com = commercial
.net = network
.org = organization

I think if anyone is looking for a forum, marketing info, product info, etc. about the 700 MHz network that the appropriate TLD would be .net

Thanks for your opinion, rep added. :)

No, AT&T actually bought the 700 MHz spectrum.
Just to give you an idea, Wi-Fi is in the 2.4 GHz spectrum, which is actually 2400 MHz.
The speculation is that this will be used for wimax deployment. It use to belong to TV stations for antennas that one would mount on their roof, before cable. Because it is the lower end of the frequency it will go much further than wi-fi, pass through walls and trees and have greater penetration and coverage. Google has already put their hat in the ring for the rest of the spectrum, which they will auction off in January 2009. They have already placed (I believe it was) a 3 Billion dollar bid, but the FCC turned them down.
With the announcement of Google's GPhone it is pretty clear of why they are looking @ the 700 MHz spectrum. :)

actually the .com extension is king, no matter the porporse of the website, the .com will always outrank the others in value.
anyone will type the .com first if it gives an error only a small portion will type the .net and a fewer the .org extension.

I don't think there would be any significant popular demand for a technical name like that. The average person doesn't know what frequency their network is and doesn't care. It's extremely niche. Your best bet is to develop it yourself imo. Best of luck.

Could be niche but today "700mhz" gets 2,770,000 google hits. Wi-Fi was a technical term not too long ago and now it is pretty common place. The 700MHz will kick some serious Wi-Fi, but more importantly Wimax, butt. When you have two giants like Google and AT&T battling over it, you know it has to be big! :)

Thanks for your opinions, reps added. :)

Also I am working on a site for it. Just got the logo finished ;)

.com will always be king... no matter what the domain name :)

Anything other then .com will have to rely on search engine placement, advertising and word of mouth. They are rarely going to get type in traffic. So yes, .com is king... but if I were doing a website about bugs, I'd rather have bugs.cc rather then awebsiteaboutbugs.com. In my opionion a good memorable domain name does matter. If there's no good name left in the .com to fit my site, I'd be quick to go for a good name in another extention before I'd go for a bad .com name. It's just going to take a bit more creative marketing to get it known.
