Fandango buys Movie.com & Movies.com from Disney

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-movies24-2008jun24,0,311495.story

Not sure this is old news but probably the first time a company buys 2 huge generics (singular and plural).

I wonder what the price was paid to Disney. Anyone know? Maybe this is old news. Quite an interesting acquisition. it certainly makes sense.

It must have been a very, very considerable sum of amount to let these 2 gems go. :snaphappy:

Long term this was a stupid move. Fandango shouldn't be able to buy these for even a couple billion. Reality is that Disney is in the business of movies. They could have done tremendous things themselves WITHOUT Fandango for movie.com and movies.com. IMHO...Not even a BILLION is worth it for Disney to sell these names.

Imagine Ebay selling off auction.com or Dell selling Network.com Disney had it's gem domain for the generic. It should have just kept it as a trophy at least.

Unrealistic, only in some domainers eyes are these "priceless".

Funny to run across this right now as I am on vacation in Fla. We went to Hollywood Studios yesterday and are going to Universal Studios, Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom later this week. With as much money as they funnel in from these parks, MOVIES and MOVIE paraphanelia I can't believe they would ever sell these domains. Mind boggling to me. I'm going to ask Mickey Mouse tomorrow WTF the guys upstairs were thinking! ;)

@fghi - Find another forum to spam dude.. :|

read this elsewhere:

That Disney was willing to shed the asset should come as no surprise given CEO Bob Iger's strategy to focus on its Disney, ABC and ESPN brands.

Disney said a dozen of its Disney Internet Group employees will be reassigned because of the Movies.com sale and no layoffs are expected.

Comcast purchased Fandango a year ago for about $200 million. While Fandango usually doesn't disclose how many tickets it sells, it recently broke protocol by saying that it had sold 1 million tickets to "Sex and the City" for its opening weekend.

This is off DnJournal this week

In another piece of big news that Matt of WeBuyThe.com directed me to, the price that Fandango paid to get Movies.com from the Walt Disney Company earlier this summer was a cool $14 million. The number was revealed in Disney's latest quartely 10-Q filing. This was the purchase of a business rather than a domain name only, so this isn't one we can chart, but it is obviously still a significant sale. Disney sold tickets to 15,000 theaters around the country from the site and Fandango intends to expand the feature set at Movies.com.
