Initiate (at NameCheap) a "pull" (transfer) into your NameCheap account, I would suspect ... of course, being liable for the min. one-year registration/renewal cost there at NameCheap, as well.

Jeff is correct. Pay Namecheap for another year and initiate the transfer from your Namecheap control panel.

ah.. start from namecheap and not from ev1. is this the normal procedure for all the registrars? start from the new host?

Yes. You need to initiate a transfer from the registrar you wish to move the domain to. Make sure that the domain is currently unlocked at EV1 - if not the transfer will fail.

Look for the authorization code for your domain at ev1 (in Domain Extras, I think) and initiate the transfer from NameCheap. Add the auth code when requested and wait for either an email confirmation or simply a transfer of the domain without notice.
(In some cases, the transfer might be rejected but you should be given some sort of explanation if that happens.)
