a new potential ad client contacts me and want ad design. in a very lucrative industry he has a terrible domain name. (think 28 character of an awkward sentence) But he also has an excellent alpha numeric 800 number. 800-two-word. (note "Two word" is only illustrative)

Well, as a domainer my first thougth was - Hmmm. what a terrible domain... what a great 800 number. So just for fun I checked if said 800-"two-word" was avail, AND IT was.

Now what should I do? How should I approach this opportunity. Remember I have no relationship with this potential client yet...

Register 800twoword.com and 800-two-word.com and then offer him my idea solution to this problem (which really isnt a problem - he didint contact me to do his site or domain - just an ad)

I need some quick opinions as I should do SOMETHING very very fast.

I would register the domains and continue negotiating for the ad work. Whether or not they contract you for the ad work I would offer to transfer the domains to them and explain the value of a strong net presence. This way you both win - they have the opportunity for a stronger brand/presence and you will have done the right thing which will shine brightly on your future.

I would wait and see if you get the deal then suggest that they may be better with another domain, after all beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

If their domain has been used previously for emails or marketing etc they may not want to change.
