I know estibot is just a tool but I have a question about the value from estibot. Is there improper weighting on .com from every other domain. I know .com is king, but I noticed a $40,000 .com is only valued at $470 in a .net. I just think the balance is just a little off.

It seems as though Estibot tends to UNDERvalue domains.

It valued one of mine, BeforeUsing.com at $5,900. That must be a great sign if it's undervaluing them! :hehe:

Or course I've also been told my domain is worthless. So.... I have not a clue.

I'm glad you brought this up because it's a good case study on using EstiBot.

EstiBot is designed to give you some solid keyword data and a ballpark dollar value appraisal - do not take the dollar value literally, just use it as a pointer - if it's high, it means that the domain is at least worth a closer look.

This is one of those domains that get an overestimation because it has a high frequency in written language. Very high in fact, 17 million phrase frequency.

Estibot can tell the difference between HomeAppliances.com (valuation $140,000) and BeforeUsing.com although they have similar Google frequencies. EstiBot knows that because BeforeUsing.com has only the Google frequency going for it, the domain is probably not worth much more than reg fee.

But it is EstiBot's job to alert the user to the fact that there is something exceptional about this domain, in this case a high Google frequency. Therefore the domain is given the benefit of the doubt and a $x,xxx valuation is given. EstiBot would not be doing its job if it dismissed a high Google frequency, because there are some valuable domains that actually don't have any search popularity or PPC ad popularity.

It's like with appendicitis. Up to one third of appendix operations are "unnecessary", because in 1/3 of the operations, it is found that the appendix is healthy, and the diagnosis was wrong.

Still, doctors are not in a hurry to change that. It's been found that this amount of "false positives" is needed to make sure that no real appendicitis cases are missed.

EstiBot gives these "false positives" in an attempt to avoid missing the gems. I tried to program the thing to rather give false positives than false negatives, because I felt that this way the user benefits more.

More than anything, EstiBot is here to help you valuate your domain name. It will provide you with keyword data and domain registration information, and a ballpark valuation to give you a starting point for your own, critical appraisal of the domain name.

Now, looking at that data, you should be doubtful about the value of this domain. Do your own research to determine whether this is a false positive or not.

If you cannot arrive at a conclusion on your own and you want to make sure, you could just register the domain, then get a second opinion from NamePros and other sources, and you still have 4 days of grace period to drop the domain again and you only lose $25c.

This method results in a bias, just like Accentnepal said, towards the values of the pool of previously sold domain names. It ignores the unsold premium names and the unsold and unregistered subpar names.

In my experience, this generally leads to overestimation of the value of low-end domain names, and underestimation of the value of high-end domain names. Generally means just that - not always, but more often than not.

This may be impracticable (not sure if the data is sufficiently centralized anywhere) or beyond your current resources, but I've wondered about including in your algorithm the number of existing domains - or domains for sale - that include the keyword(s) in the domain being valuated by estibot. It could get more specific (with multi-word domains) by gaugeing the domain in question against the pool of unsold domains that begin with the same keyword, end with the same keyword, and/or contain the same keyword.

I could see this working in conjunction w/availability of the keyword or KW phrase in various extensions. For example, if "used cars" is gone in all extensions, the number of unsold domains containing these keywords might raise the value: the specific phrase is highly sought and unavailable. But if "you cars" is available in all extensions, the number of unsold domains containing these keywords would lower the value: supply far outweighs demand for this phrase.

Something along those lines would seem to address this issue. I currently use Sedo to get a measure of the unsold domains pertinent to ones I'm interested in. Maybe estibot could do the same.
