England hold nerve in two-run thriller

The Bulletin by Jenny Thompson

August 6, 2005

England 407 and 181 (Flintoff 73) beat Australia 308 and 279 (Warne 42, Lee 43*) need another 30 runs to beat England 407 and 181 (Flintoff 73)
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out

England pulled off a dramatic victory at Edgbaston, winning by the slenderest of margins - two runs - to level the series in the most astonishing manner. After a battling 42 from Shane Warne, Michael Kasprowicz and Brett Lee took Australia close, and when Simon Jones dropped Kasprowicz with 15 runs to go, an improbable win for the visitors suddenly seemed probable. But the other Jones, Geraint, clung on to catch Kasprowicz off Steve Harmison and England had the match in the bag.

Full report to follow

11.30am Australia 308 and 252 for 9 (Lee 31*, Kasprowicz 15*) need another 30 runs to beat England 407 and 181 (Flintoff 73)

Australia launched a brilliant rearguard to give themselves a real chance of an improbable win at Edgbaston, with Brett Lee and Michael Kasprowicz refusing to be cowed by England's pace attack, and taking a liking to the spin offering of Ashley Giles.

In just 20 minutes following Shane Warne's departure for a gritty 42, the final pair had added 46 - including 13 from one hapless Giles over - to take their team within 30 runs of victory. England will still back themselves to finish the match off, but Australia are giving them much more of a run for their money than they might perhaps have bargained before.

11.10am Australia 308 and 220 for 9 (Lee 15*) need another 76 runs to beat England 407 and 181 (Flintoff 73)

Andrew Flintoff got the first of the two wickets required for England to level the series, dismissing Shane Warne just as Australia were starting to look ominous. Warne really gave his side hope with a battling, convincing 42, but trod on his stumps to a Flintoff full delivery.

Australia had had much the better of the first half hour with Warne and Brett Lee taking their opportunities to score, as they began to chip their way towards the target. They played good shots, and with few risks in a ninth-wicket stand of 45, although Harmison induced Lee's edge but the ball flew over the slips into vacant space. But then Flintoff, who just can't keep out of the action, settled England's nerves with Warne's wicket - and victory is there for the taking.

Close Australia 308 and 175 for 8 (Warne 20*) need another 107 runs to beat England 407 and 181 (Flintoff 73)

England need just two wickets to wrap up the second Test at Edgbaston and level the series at 1-1. Following the third amazing day of action Australia are tottering on 175 for 8, in need of a batting miracle from Shane Warne following his bowling heroics of yesterday, when he took 6 for 46. England claimed the extra half hour last evening but couldn't complete victory, although Steve Harmison struck with the final ball of the day.

The star of the third day was Andrew Flintoff who produced heroics with bat and ball. He shrugged off a shoulder injury to smash 73 in a final wicket stand of 51 with Simon Jones; took three wickets, including Ricky Ponting for a duck, and then held a catch to remove Adam Gilchrist.

:hi:
yes England did win the cricket match against Australia. BTW i am shocked as well, because it was looking like as if they were going to loose. And for the information of everyone, the last person given out was actaully not out according to the cricket laws. If the ball hits a batsmans glove and is caught thats only out if the glove is attached to the bat, whereas on the last ball the glove was not attached to the bat and umpire gave it out, so lucky England.

I've never understood the game, seen it on tv a couple of times - never really figured out what the deal is with a ball hitting a couple of sticks he he. Please do explain though :)

I'll check it out, thanks :) Patience is not one of my virtues though, watching games that can stretch over several days would drive me bonkers!

If you play it or learn how to you will find it way more interesting, I don't bother watching it for a solid 5 days, I would watch about 1 to 2 hours a day.
