Im finding that lately web developers of end users are advising them against targeted geo domains for their industry.

I used to pop 3-5 sales a day without a sweat, but now its becoming annoying!

Anything I can try?

I also find that most end users, dont understand how all of this works. Im about to jump out of the end user market and hop on the auction bandwagon, but I know my turn over wont nearly be the same.

Any advice from the pros?

hi Stev,
just to clarify your question - do you mean developers are advising not to use domains such as areakeyword.com ?

best regards.

Exactly. Like selling a Tampa hotel, tampaaccommodation.com or tampahotels.com

Cheers

It's a bit of a conundrum Steve.
their have been a lot of changes to the big search engine algorithms recently.
Two things sping to mind, possibly some developers think that geo-domains are saturated, moreoever, some may think SEO holds more weight than having the geo within the domain.
best regards.

I agree with you. Sometimes I just feel they dont want us domainers to interfere or step in on their clients needs or benefits.

For instance, I registered a geo trailer domain, dropped on a wordpress site linking to other trailer companies and with in about 3 days I was 1 one for that geo search phrase. I dont think its coincidence though.

Geo domains usually are worth more in an offline branding, where the name is easily remembered. Sometimes putting all that across confused the end users and turns them away.

I think the issue developers have is that most keyword rich domains are run by marketers and considered less suitable for corporate branding. I would suggest to the end user or developer that they build the keyword domain and use another corporate name to point to that site.

If a client wanted a domain name for their business, I would personally not suggest a geo domain. Reason being that it has no affiliation with the actual company name, barr the location of the company. I would always suggest they get a domain which reflects their brand/company name.
It gives the company an 'identity' to which people can look for if they have heard of them, and much easier for word of mouth advertising (the best advertising youll ever get), by using a Geo domain name as your domain, you will struggle with this, unless you use it as a brand name - which most clients already have a brand name before a domain name.

I would however, suggest they look into geo-specific domains to point to their main domain name (or a sub-directory/domain).

I would never use 'webdevelopmentnorthampton.co.uk' for my site. Thats what SEO and adwords are for.

The only use for Geo domains is when the non-geo part of the domain is actually 100% relevent to the Geo part. In such examples as 'newyorkrestaurants.com' or 'alabamaweather.com'

In particularly I was referring to accommodation. Ie: Capetownaccommodation.com

Some of them are even ranking very quickly for those keywords. But obviously some web developers know best...:td:
