hi guys,
i'm just wondering how weird the spelling 'encyclopaedia' seems in different places in the world, especially in the us. it seems pretty normal in the uk/ australia/ new zealand?

i'm sure 'encyclopedia' is more used (heaps more google results). but i see 'encyclopaedia' is in US dictionaries (although namepros picks it up as a typo). perhaps it gets occasional use? or it has an old worlde charm to it?

i guess i need to know if you saw something like:

www.musicencyclopaedia.com (someone's parked page btw - i just chose that name at random)

would you remember it? would it be too weird for you to trust/ click it? or any other thoughts. it would lose traffic to the US spelling.

i'm no worried about SEO as it's a brandable name i'm thinking of...

thanks in advance.

(after typing it so much encyclopaedia/ encyclopedia both seem weird to me)

:p

encyclopedia seem correct to me. encyclopaedia just looks weird with the "a" in between

that's great, perhaps if you could tell me which country you're speaking from, and if you've ever seen the "a" spelling before.

encyclopaedia is the old english traiditional spelling
An encyclopedia, encyclopaedia or (traditionally) encyclopædia is a comprehensive written compendium that contains information on all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encyclopaedia

^ if you look at the above, the two spellings are side by side, and the one with the joined ae is referred to as the 'traditional' one.

i was taught "encyclopaedia" at school, so i'm guessing it's the (current) UK one, with encyclopedia the american spelling. sort of like 'colors' and 'colours'. i'm assuming the american one has crept in worldwide, but not everywhere.

i'm sure the US one is/ will become the most dominant one, but it just feels like a typo for me to type "encyclopedia" (and probably vice versa)!

weblord, NP seems to want to pace out my reps for you, sorry!

cool, nice info. that's from england. so maybe there's a weird pocket in australia still using encyclopaedia, then?

:)

and yet:

-encyclopaedia.com is owned by an australian
-encyclopaedias.com is owned by an american
-webencyclopaedia.com is owned by a dutchman, and
-webencyclopedia.com went for $5.5k in '06, to a canadian

we'll only know names like 'musicpedia' soon enough, so i guess it doesn't matter
