Ebay Verification Process

I heard that Ebay does some sort of verification process once a bid reaches a certain amount. Can anyone shed some light on this for me and tell me the amount and what steps they take? I have searched the ebay site for a bit but not finding anything on it.

I only think they do it for really high items considering popularity, or celeb/movie or charitable stuff.
I have no idea - but probably call you.
What other way could they do it?

i have sold and bought items for between 2000-3000 and never had to go through anything besides the regular sign up.
