I know that i will get penalized in search engines for having the same content as another site. But would i get penalized for having a 2 pages on my site with the same content? Because I have my actual blog post and an exact replica in my forums section. And also does doing that help my site in search engines?

thanks in advance for the help

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

i think it depends on a lot of things, like how much content is copied. if you were actually an "seo guru" as your name suggests, then you'd understand why.

You might have seen the short paragraphs on almost all blogs which leads to the full page with a Read More link.

So try to think around that scenario. Keep something full on one page and some blurb maybe on other with the link back to the full page for More Reading ;)

If two pages are exactly the same, then that is not good. there is no need to have two pages with same content. But if you have copied content from one page and used in some other page, like in discussion at a forum where there will be more content added too, then that is ok.

But that is ok if such thing happens only few times. Google penalizes for duplicate content

Duplicate content is very misunderstood around the net, you'll see loads of places that have copied forum posts, blog posts , rss feeds , copy and paste from wikipedia and more but still rank well in google....why ?

because duplicate content isnt what everyone makes it out to be , duplicate content is more based the page over all , i.e headers ,footers , other content on the page , whether its slightly altered etc, if you have a site that has other content on the same page , different headers and footers etc then most of the time google wont know its duplicate content.

Another reason why you Shouldn't have the same page on the same site because it will be exactly the same and their isnt any real point to it, this is why everyone should redirect the http://www.yourdomain to the http://yourdomain or visa versa so that google doesnt see the same content in both locations , google could possibly see subdomains as another domain , which is what the www. is , isnt it ?

There is a decent article here that explains how to get around the usual culprits of duplicate content from the same site :

are you sure about that?

so if i copy all the content from your website but add my own banner at the top and my own domain and copyright year at the bottom then that will trick google into thinking that it isn't duplicate content?

If I work for years copy pasting articles etc and modifying them a little bit etc. Let assume I get good rankings. But then what :'( one small tweak in google algo and it is caught.

I would rather go for complete unique content or nothing at all.

good point. google's (and other search engines) are always getting "smarter" every day, and spending the time to create unique content in the first place will save more time than having to adjust slightly here and there all the time with duplicate content.

Just a question. Why are you asking such questions when you supposedly run 2 SEO sites? Or is this a part of your SEO?

Such questions are quite simple if Google see 2 pages on your site with similar content then it will try to decide which is the proper 1. If it chooses incorrectly then it will have a negative affect on your site.

In this case a full penalty would not be applied for your site, Google will try to determine which page to keep in it's index, the other page it will simply filter out. Hence the word filter not penalizing, there is no penalty association to that action.

Like Riverwire mentioned, duplicate content is widely misunderstood. You could easily re-use an article, but that page you've created may not be indexed or may be placed into the supplemental index or simply rank lower then the original. Either way, you create content to rank and get traffic and duplicate content isn't going to work for you in the long run.

You won't have as much chance ranking for keywords in that article as the original article on another site. Unless your site has more authority then it's very well possible you outrank the original site.

And if you pretty much only have duplicate content, for example you've copied dozens of articles of another site and you don't have much content on your own, the original versus duplicate content ratio isn't really something that would work in your advantage, it's most likely your site will be identified as a splog of some sort.

Not on your site, merely to the page you initially created or the new page, whichever one Google selects as the most important one. The one Google considers less important will simply be filtered out.

The rest of the site will not be affected.

if you site have a lot of pages and contains 2 pages with duplicate content you will not be penalized by search engines!
