Dramsystem feedback

I was thinking about purchasing Dramsystem for $60 and setting up a website with it. I understand that they set you up with a free $7.95 enom account when you purchase the Dramsystem license. I wanted to get some feedback on this from others who have purchased and used this system. How easy is it to setup? Do you have to have SSL to use the system? I currently only have Paypal but will probably get a merchant account soon. Does it work if I want the transactions to be done on the merchant account provider's website?

Thanks!

Setup is moderately difficult, and make absolutely sure your host meets ALL the sytem requirements or you'll have a heck of a time. Once it's installed it is a nice program, though I wish it had more customzation ability.

Linux/FreeBSD/Windows
PHP (safe_mode off, register_globals on)
(v4.0.6, 4.1.1, 4.1.2, 4.2.0, 4.2.1, 4.2.2, 4.2.3, 4.3.0, 4.3.1, 4.3.2)
MySQL
cURL
cURL compiled with SSL**
eNom reseller account

Great value for only $60 though.

I think it is a wonderfull system. But, you will need knowlege on setting up certificates and ssl. You probally will want to customize your template also so a little html will come in handy.

The problem I am finding with these programs is that there are alot of people that have already beat us to the punch on this idea. So in my experience it is very difficult ot make a business out of these types of deals.

You need a edge over the other guy's such as a killer name and have a knowlege of how to generate traffic through ads etc...

Also, I have found out that Domain registrars are making money on us buying reseller accounts more than maybe domain registration. It seems to me they dont care if your business makes it or not if they sale you something they did their job. It could be more of an expense than a profit on your side also. Just something you should be aware of.

Just some things to consider.

Thanks. I do know HTML and a little PHP so I'm sure I can customize it to my liking. Problem might lie with the SSL cert tho. I have a reseller account with one dedicated IP which I already have a cert setup for (for another domain) so for the domain I would use for this site, I cannot setup another cert (since I've found you can setup only one ssl cert per IP). I've also heard they offer hosting that meets the specs required but didn't see that on their site.

Just a few words of warning, Evilhaider. DRAMS encrypts their source code. Not only does this put a small hit on performance, but if you want to alter the look of the system, you have to modify some PHP files in a templates directory - and some important parts of the system can't even have their appearance changed!? The parts that can be changed are tedious to do so because the HTML coding is not good at all and there is no common code (if you want to change the appearance of the user signup form, you will have to modify at least 3 different files - for different cases). Also, sometimes (about once every 4 days at various times) the domain lookup (registration search) will freeze. By freeze, I mean it will look as if it is loading a new page, but never do it and never give an error message. It will simply stay on the page, and you can't click to another link on the page to stop it. When this happened on my test site, I checked the DRAMS demo site - and the same thing happened. However, I could get a response by using eNom's sample API, so I knew it wasn't eNom's fault. My question about this issue on the DRAMS support site has gone unanswered. Also, one big downer is there is no cart to store domains - your users will have to buy domains one at a time (or multiple extensions of the same term at best). Finally, there is no encryption of your eNom username and password. I don't understand this at all - if they are going to secure their source code (and source code borrowed from eNom and from others) like the Great Wall of China, why would they leave one of the most important pieces of data hanging out there?

That being said, if any of those issues bother you as much as they bother me, you should do a little more research. $60 is a decent price for the amount of work that went into it, but I purchased it and was so turned off by the experience that I might just use the Reseller signup page or dump it completely. Just FYI, there has been some mention of a new product - possibly a new version of DRAMS in Beta. Hopefully this will address some of the notes I've made above.

Very informative DomainSpring. I'm planning to buy this product but based on your input. I'm holding for now.

Thanks.

I will agree there are some major issues with Drams primarily around the customization. However it does use Style sheets extensively which makes it a wee bit easier.

Also the lack of a cart and bulk registrations is a bit frustrating, but I understand some of these issues will be addressed in Version 5
