Anyone else try to grab old-school, pre-CIRA third-level domains when they expire?

When they drop I like getting old LLL's if I can, similar to this active site:

www.rhc.mb.ca

I like them because they are ancient in terms of .CA domains (registered at UBC) and have really never come to market. Anyone else?

In a big surprise, ESJ.CA went first overall, just ahead of my top pick BGB.CA, and naturally HENRY.CA went third.

123 domains selected, with MyID.ca getting 4 of the top 5 (and 5 of the top 10) with Pool (4/10) and Sibername (1/10) making up the rest.

Crazy Fact of the Day: These three registrars accounted for 25 of the top 26 selections. Think about that for a second.

Haven't heard that term (third level) in awhile.. assume every province had one? Government sites?

That were the way domains used to be registered, back in the dark ages, before the CIRA.Then when the CIRA took over in 2000, they were grandfathered in, and no one could register the .CA of that letter combination.

If one of those drop, you know it's as old as the hills.

For example, if I try to register RHC.CA, it errors out with:

The domain name provided conflicts with at least one other registered domain name and as a result is not available for registration (e.g. xyz.ca conflicts with xyz.on.ca).

It's also impossible to tell how old they really are, as the CIRA re-registered everything in 2000.

So if you get your hands on one...bonus!

Had to google...found this interesting..

"
Third-level (provincial) and fourth-level (municipal) domains[edit]
See also: ISO 3166-2:CA
UBC's registry operations once favoured fourth-level names (such as city.toronto.on.ca) for purely local entities or third-level names for entities operating solely within one province. Nationally incorporated companies could have a .ca domain, while provincially incorporated companies required the letters of their province, like .mb.ca. Only an entity with presence in two or more provinces was typically registered directly under .ca; this complex structure (and the long delays in getting .ca registration) caused many Canadian entities to favour the .com, .org and .net registrations, despite the then-higher cost.[citation needed]

Currently, any of the above listed parties can register a domain with a name of their choosing followed directly by .ca. CIRA stopped accepting new registrations for third-level domains on October 12, 2010,[3] citing complexity and the low number of new third domain registration as the reason for the change. As a result, the following domains at the third-level are no longer available for registration:

Domain Province/Territory
.ab.ca Alberta
.bc.ca British Columbia
.mb.ca Manitoba
.nb.ca New Brunswick
.nf.ca Newfoundland
.nl.ca Newfoundland and Labrador
.ns.ca Nova Scotia
.nt.ca Northwest Territories
.nu.ca Nunavut
.on.ca Ontario
.pe.ca Prince Edward Island
.qc.ca Quebec
.sk.ca Saskatchewan
.yk.ca Yukon"
