Who gives a f**k what Schwartz says

I give a fu**

he deserves respect
in my view

as he has risked a lot
at a time when nobody knew if it would pay off

in order to make it
he had to go for it
in a non-supporting environment

do the same
talk about it
and you have my respect as well

you can learn from him
thats for sure

Also, you need to use proper language, this is a professional forum.

Donuts makes a good point. Using a .tv for a vlog seems more of an endorsement for NewG's versus being a .com maximalist.

Domain extensions have meaning to specific niches and industries. We are seeing it with country codes as well as with the NewG's. Examples being .AI for artificial intelligence, .co for company, .gg for good game and of course .tv for video content.

Disclaimer: I invest in all extensions including the most sought after, .com.

cctlds used as gtlds have very little in common with ngtlds...

If you are going to go to something else other than .com, at least it should have an advantage and cctlds have it: they are shorter.

So, tv, co, ai, io, .me are in the category of their own. I wouldn't include gg there yet. It could prove just a temporary fad...

I don't disagree with that. I was writing from a domain investor perspective as well. Maybe it's not the same as your perspective, but it's still a perspective.

Do you have any data to support that? At $70/year renewals, you need to to make 1 sale of $7000 per year holding 100 domains just to pay for renewals. Good luck with that, unless you have perfect terms for gaming, like console, play, team, sports, esports, compete, tube, stream...

I won't comment on Donuts media advertising budget, or lack, since I don't know it. I do know they had an effective booth at NamesCon and an eye catching big banner highlighting some platinum domain names, both sold and unsold.

But on specific topic of the tweet series, even though it may well backfire, the logic in the series of statements is strong in my opinion. They are respectful and give credit to the great insights Rick offers domain investors through blog, tweets and video series. They also acknowledge his incredible success as a domain investor. They then draw a parallel between the elegant design of the name Rick.tv and what is possible to similarly do in new domain extensions.

Sneaky Advertising Geniuses @ Donuts promoting premium domains. No budget for main media ads. Pathetic

The question is; why Donuts didn't jump into hotdog debate year/s ago but now*... when in need to sell/promote own agenda - premium domains (800.000) + going one step forward by using well known person in a hope to attract more domainers (now they need them?). imo
It can be debated, but IMO Donuts has definitely failed in their marketing efforts. Their biggest failure was comparing to .com by calling NewG's "non .com." They would have been better off promoting their attributes instead of trying to degrade .com.

They heavily counted on domainers to do the marketing job for them - for free + taxing them quietly with a very high renewals. Good job!

Exactly, and buying a 2-letter ccTLD has absolutely nothing in common with endorsing new gTLDs.
I don't recall any mention of endorsement. I think the point that they were making is that if you look at special purpose country TLDs, like .tv, they work across the dot in the way that Rick.tv elegantly expresses his personal brand. They were saying you can do a similar thing with new gTLDs with the two sides of the dot in a unified way expressing the idea you want to promote. The .com (or any other) extension adds meaning in some contexts but not in others. If it is RedCross it definitely adds to have the extension .org. If it is for a large financial enterprise the .com is almost essential. But if you are doing a family website (one of their examples in the series), a .com does not add to the domain name any additional information, and therefore is not elegant design.

Donuts divide their domains into three categories. Standard, Premium and Platinum. There are relatively few platinum but they carry huge prices. But interestingly, while premium carry lower prices on a premium Donuts you pay that higher price each year, while on a platinum one you pay much more for year one but after that it is standard renewal (I hope all of this is still valid - going by what a rep at the Donuts booth told me at NamesCon). Anyway, it seems to me if you are going to sell platinum names and then just collect standard, which is trivial compared to the platinum price that is usually 6 figures, why not promote them as permanently registered domains?

It's not 2017 anymore. The hype has settled.

I was trying to make the point that the extension, both cc's and NewG's, can have a meaning besides being generic.

I wouldn't include gg there yet
Alright, you don't include it, but some big budget esports groups are building on it.

All the power to them! This is a domain investor forum, not a gamer forum. So I write from a domain investor perspective.

It is too niche with too high acquisition and renewal costs to qualify for that for now.

Totally Agreed! Hope we do not then show them our major support atleast till the regs and renewals go down to a good low price ie. like below $20

Totally agree with this opinion. Backfire or not the goals is to tell folks is working.

That's bad tactic:

8/ Industries #evolve, including ours. Leaders must evolve or, well, cease to lead. You’ve evolved your thinking about the impact and value of domain extensions #beyond .com.
