I slipped up with one recently, and I didn't enable it. It normally gets enabled automatically, but I must have cleared the request accidentally. I'm now getting spammed incessantly by people with little command of english who seem to think that I want to use their rubbish scammy services. I'm thinking of changing the phone numbers in my domain details to a selection of their numbers. :)

This is assuming you want privacy enabled on domains for sale.

@Kuffy I've had to block 20 number's this month alone, Change of number pending............ Won't make that mistake again.

Very true. I also found that even if I do not want privacy to be generally enabled on a particular domain, it still makes sense to enable it initially, and let the domain remain private for a month or so. After which time most Indian bots will stop scanning or sending emails

Most of my names are at GoDaddy where they charge a fee for Privacy.

I know some registrars offer Free Privacy -- I might start looking into moving my names out of GoDaddy to somewhere that offers Free Privacy (as long as I would still get the emails from people trying to contact me through WHOIS lookups).

Its really sad because I have relied on selling my names via WHOIS but it can no longer be trusted. Its been so badly abused.

I'm with Name Silo, and their privacy service sends me purchase enquiries that come in via email. I've been domaining for 20 years on and off, and I've only had one phone enquiry that resulted in a sale. Maybe answering the phone with "Eff off" discourages buyers. :)

If a registrar doesn't offer free privacy, then it isn't a domainer's registrar in my opinion.

Maybe the solution is to list a premium rate phone number in the whois record, to earn a few pennies per call.

Ugh, it occasionally happens - but it's always a headache when it does! It always seems to be the same opening script, doesn't it?

Now this is worthy of consideration!

When are you going to call Kate's Kalling Service? I'll sign up.

on a domain
that I want to sell

never

I have yet to private register any of my domains, while getting emails/phone calls is annoying, I still rather save that $10 and use it towards the purchase of another domain.

I am fine with marking email as spam and adding calls to my "block contact" list

There is a thread somewhere about this on NP. Might be tougher than you think to actually implement and get away with although it's a great idea.

NameSilo - free privacy. Other registrars may also, dunno.
