I started off as an affiliate a few years ago. I learned alot through boards like this and ALOT of trial and error.
The one area that I see seriously lacking in the affiliate world is some old fashion face time. If you're serious about affiliate marketing, then one week a quarter you should be physically meeting with business development managers / affiliate managers at your top brands.
You'd be surprised how much work will come your way just by making face time with these brands.
So get the hell off of facebook & messenger, and get some real face to face time with your partners (even if its at a strip club, and no not joking).
