By definition:

Dictionary:
Squatter is "a person who settles on land or occupies property without title, right, or payment of rent."

Wikipedia:
"Squatting consists of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied space or building, usually residential, that the squatter does not own, rent or otherwise have permission to use."

Domainer pay for domain's annual fee and have rights to use it in legitimate business and should not be categorized as squatter.

Today, I was looking for types of scams that I was thinking of discussing in my future project. I have collected a few topics and today I typed in "biggest scam in domain industry" and of course snapnames will be on that list.

I found this article from techcrunch Domain Industry Rocked By Shill Auction Bidding Admission

The guys who wrote the article doesn't know the difference between domainer and squatter.

Biggest scam I would have to think is shill bidding. You see it all the time. Some 3 day old garbage reg getting bids. I'm sure there is syndicates everywhere.

The halvarez scandal has really made me shy about bidding on the aftermarket. I still do it, but with all due caution.

The problem is that some domainers ARE squatters (typosquatters and cybersquatters). Every time one of them gets caught or some other scandal like shill bidding hits the news, it reinforces the negative perceptions of the industry as a whole.

The industry needs to either clean up it's act or start generating some positive press if we want that label to disappear.

In the context of the industry, squatters aren't squatting on domains, but on trademarks. The fact that they paid for the domain is irrelevant.
