I recently bought a domain from someone.

The domain is registered at www.DomainSite.com and he will be transfering to an account on www.DomainSite.com so the trnsfer should be free.

But when I look at the WHOIS information at www.whois.sc I see the following.

Domain ID:D2250391-AFIN
Domain Name:*******.IN (NOTE: I edited name out)
Created On:11-Jun-2006 11:13:12 UTC
Last Updated On:12-Jun-2006 17:48:50 UTC
Expiration Date:11-Jun-2007 11:13:12 UTC
Sponsoring Registrar:Name.com LLC (R65-AFIN)
Status:TRANSFER PROHIBITED
Registrant ID:****
Registrant Name:****
Registrant Organization:/
Registrant Street1:*********
Registrant City:******
Registrant State/Province:****
Registrant Postal Code:****
Registrant Country:BE
Registrant Phone:+32.0494709990

Notice the bold area above ^^^

Would this mean that he is unable to transfer the domain to me since he hasnt owned it for too long. Or is this something totally different in meaning.

Transfer is when moving from one registrar to other (for example from Domainsite to Godaddy).

Moving between different account at same registrar is called push, and is usually free.

At Domainsite, push is free, and is doesn't matter if the domain is locked (transfer prohibited).

He should be able to push the domain to your Domainsite account.

Better edit your previous post and remove his personal data (name, address, phone number...)

To be sure, check with Domainsite as well.

I think "TRANSFER PROHIBITED" if you transfer that domain to another registrar, you can transfer taht domain to different account at DomainSite... good luck ;)

should the owner unlock it first?

Only for transfer, for a push it doesn't matter.

Without meaning to sound like an a** here, I really suggest the OP to check
with Domainsite about this. How one registrar treats a certain process isn't
necessarily done the same way by another.
