I was verifying a domain's availability, since i had names pulled from under my feet every time i searched names in registrar search tool when i did not buy immediately, i figured the safest way to check was to type the name in top url space of the browser (http//:...etc.) I did just that thinking it was safe and the domain was bought by someone else in the next 24 hours.
Can somebody explain how this is done. Black hat hacking?Malware? Is there a depository in the google system for empty/blank results that these people consult? Nothing is safe anymore, the ocean seems more full of sharks than water. Do you know any place with serious knowlegde about this or have an answer?

How the hell did they get that from my url type-in ???

I dont know about your incident but I have had several domains that were available and literately as I went to register them someone got them at the exact same time.
I always check to see if there is even a whois on any domain I am about to reg because GD has a bad habit of listing names available when they are not available so checking for a whois is always good.

But the one I lost out to had no whois and moments later there was a fresh new whois.
Once was a name from what I could tell that had never been reg'd before, Coincidence?
Maybe but I doubt it.

Oli22, are you trying to register specific things you are recently hearing or reading about that is in the news or on the internet? I am sure there are many who try to register a domain that is keyword for something that is currently trending.

Is it just some obscure domains you are trying to register (example maybe)?. I have nothing for you about why it is being snagged just by you checking for it. Maybe someone is "domain tasting" the domain for traffic. Check back in about 5 days and see if it is available again.

What website were you on getting ready to register the domain?

I think the term is called Domain Sniffing.

typing a url into a browser and seeing if a website pops up isn't very accurate. There are plenty of reasons why a domain could be registered but have no website. It is safe, however, unless you have malware or someone spying on your internet connection.

try www.who.is for lookups.

Maybe GD is a spy :D

I was recently checking Deny.Us it was still available, one day later some one regged it... I think it is possible that registrar has a database of ppl's queries and can easily list only available domains and crosscheck them against some kind of keyword list... ;) thats how I found deny.us in the first place :) actually system at DL did... But I was hesitating to reg it...

You think that's bad.. every name I think of has already been taken? I think aliens from the future are looking what I register in a parallel universe and then beat me to it here. It's annoying.

A conspiracy theories - easy to start but rarely come with details. The only name actually listed on this thread is deny.us. A FOUR LETTER word which is on every single site that lists FOUR LETTER WORDS.

I don't imagine it was free for very long. A VERB in the .US of FOUR LETTERS? If you like those you register them. THEN... or before your parallel self.. so YESTERDAY hopefully. :hearts:

GoDaddy "Bulk Registration" tool is totally safe.

godaddy.com/domains/searchbulk.aspx

And remember, there are 10,000s domainers checking domains like you. If a name is valuable then someone will take it in 24 hours or 1 week etc..

Check czbt453mn.com type domains. If they taken after 24 hours so your tool is a spy.

I am using GoDaddy "Bulk Registration" tool since long time, it is clean.

Welcome to NamePros!

There have been many threads about this very subject. I think the key here [and a quick fix moving forward] is not waiting. If you come across an available name you like, register the name immediately. I believe GoDaddy and others still offer refunds within a day or two of registration, in the event you change your mind. Check your favorite registrar's TOS for information on refunds, etc.

That aside, the many times I have experienced this I had to consider why I hesitated to begin with. In other words, what kept you from registering the name? Perhaps the name wasn't really that great. After all, why was it still available? Something gave you pause about the name, which more often than not turns out to be a benefit. If nothing more, it is one less name you will have to renew [or drop] next year.

-Regards

Why do they go to all that trouble when they can already read your mind?

My mind doesn't have very good grammar... it's really not clear what's going on in there. Trust me, I know.

I have had same issue with godaddy about 2-3 times, I would type the domain in to register but don't execute because is not a good coupon or discount code atm, then I go back and domain is taken, I sometimes think someone is scanning the register tool bar.

Or it could be the fact that other people are interested in the .com as well and registered the domain, I will never know.

thanks,

Jason

The domain i am talking about was put up for sale for 1700 dollars a few days after it was bought, after i looked it up. I never typed in to a registrar, only my url, it's too close a coincidence. I want to get these people real bad.
I have to find a way to proof it.
-Is there a tool to see how many times/date a search term was used on google?
-A repository for blank searches ?

Since it all seems out of reach, i think i will have to get the company to admit to foul play using jedi mind techniques

Damn i wanna f_c#! up these cowards, scum of the web

Verisign tracks missed hits on names I believe. I dont know if they sell this but your name was likely 1 of 2,000,000.

Caveat: most isps steal this traffic now too :)

I know for a fact if you are logged in to your GD account and do a domain search, but don't register they still know what you searched for and tie that to your account for marketing purposes, maybe more!

It has happened several times to me...a day or two after I search, I get an email from GD saying "blankity----blank.com is still available to register."

Just happened this week in fact again.

Typing in a URL (direct navigation) is much worse than doing a search on a registrar.

There are URL sniffers out there, and if you have any vulnerabilities, these sniffers will spy on your moves.

I don't know it, but there is a way to block spies.

For getting accurate results, yes. Searching on a registrar goes towards future suggestions in some cases *Godaddy, Name*

There are who is searches that claim to be clean. Best best is to use the respective registry WHOIS servers but even these have been accused of selling access to their logs.

If a name is *that* good instant reg it.

You could also go to who.is and look for the .im or some extension you don't want and it will show you other extensions available - might not make any difference but you're all just paranoid anyway.

I don't understand what you are saying here.

What's next? We all have to setup a dark Internet with anony-DNS searches with insta-destroy, volatile memory?

Why after all these years and noted prior postings on this scenario, do people check for available names at GD? One buys their names at GD, but first checks the availability somewhere safe; like Whois.sc or DomainTools.

Now how do we know Whois.sc or DomainTools. are safe?

When humans are behind the scenes nothing is really safe.
