Domain-Selling "Partner"?

Hey all! This is an odd question to start an interesting debate... perhaps...

Almost every time I've contacted someone about buying a domain name from them, and almost every time I've been contacted BY someone about a domain I have, any offers are usually answered like this...

"Let me talk to my partner and get back to you."


For example...

Me: "Are you at all willing to sell this domain for $XXX?"

Them: "That's pretty low for a quality domain like RappingGrannyMP3Warehouse.ru! However, let me check with my partner."


Or...

Them: "Would you sell me your domain, AwesomeNameGoesHere.com, for $1?"

Me: "Er, sorry, but I can't do that. I'm looking for at least one hojillion dollars."

Them: "Let me check with my partner and see if we can offer more."





Admit it, you guys. There IS no partner!!

I would agree in most cases, but I for one honestly do have a partner.

(Disclaimer: I do not currently own AwesomeNameGoesHere.com or RappingGrannyMP3Warehouse.ru so I am not the one you are dealing with in either of these situations. )

generally yeah probably an imaginary partner, I personally do have 150-200 domains under brokerage besides my own owned names so although not technically a partner I would have to consult with them before selling any of those

Could be that they want to avoid the situation of saying a no to you by saying "my partner does not agree". Its a way to easily pass the blame to some one else if the deal does not go through. They can then keep the channel open for any future names.

I think partnering up is quite common, often pals get into this together. I know of a few. I've had a domaining partner since the beginning, we split everything 50/50.
Our lives/work have split the last few months though so we've dissolved the partnership. Was fun while it lasted, no bad stories, we were open and fair with each other and made co-decisions.

I like the ones where the responders say the name is "currently in development" while at the same time their name is listed at TDNAM or other aftermarket venue for low $xxx.

I have no problem with needing to get approval or discuss with a partner (husband/wife/DP/SO, split personality, whatever), but if there is a hint of dishonesty or that sleazy car-salesman feel to it, then it's probably going nowhere. This goes for the cocky "made" domainers as well.

It's a tactic but it may also be a half-lie too
Let me explain.

For instance, while I buy domains to resell them (hopefully), I also buy many to develop them. Anyway, I avoid buying domains that I wouldn't develop. But like other domainers I am stuck with hundreds of domains and you can't develop that many in a short time.

So I tend to park domains until I have the time to do something with them. They are passively and potentially available for sale if the price is decent enough - since I am not eager to sell. While I am not truly expecting offers will be made, you never know. I have sold names that I thought would not be of interest to anybody.

But what you're saying is quite valid, not to mention that domain holders like to play similar tricks on your when you contact them with a view to purchasing their domains :P

Totally. In one instance with a .TV purchase it was inferred I did something like this. Though I did develop the name, when I saw I could not do it as envisioned I got a decent offer and sold it. At one point the previous owner offered me twice what I paid him which was a very good amount for the name. Anyway, he goes on to blog about it and so no more business with them.
