Hey all,

Okay so I'm not a complete newbie but I do have a question that popped into my head recently :p

If a new website has been launched and I thought it was a really good idea that could essentially turn into something very big (I.e. Facebook big)

What are my rules when it comes to regging the name in another extension?

It is currently only a .com, are you allowed to register .net or other extensions or are there copyright or legal issues with this?

Also, what about typo domain names - I assume everything is cosure with these?

Thanks!
Mark

The extensions themselves don't exactly bring up the trademark issues. It is the names that you end up choosing. For example if you were able to register facebok.com as a typo, you most likely would have an issue if you attempted to develop it and such. Also you might find that you would have trouble selling the domain by itself to since most people don't want a domain they can't do anything with.

There are some rules for extensions also but those are mainly location rules. In order to register a domain in the .us extension for example, the rules state that you should be a resident of the United States or have some sort of business in the United States. The rules for domain extensions are normally listed on the site you register your domain at. You would want to look at the registration agreement or terms of service, etc. for the specific details.

Okay so would you suggest just maybe grabbing a few domain names that are related to the certain site?

As an example, if the site was facebook.com - maybe it would be like me registering facebookapps.com?

Oh what about "My...[websitehere].com"? (I.e. myfacebook.com)
Any legal issues with this?

Any ideas?

Instead of buying domain names in all kind of different related keyword*.com then I think it would be better to register your TM, then you automaticly would have the right to f.ex. my(yourtm).com or something like that.

It isn't my TM. I mean the site I'm referring to isn't owned or related to me in any way.
