Anyone ever "rent" one of their domains or have any thoughts on domain rentals?

I'd like to hear some different viewpoints on it... Seems to me like this could become a very popular way to do business in the not so distant future if domain sales keep rocking and rolling...

I don't know any official regulation for "domain renting"
I support the idea but what if the guy that rent the domain from you be banned from Google or start send massive spam from your domain ?

I believe the situation is too fragile for domains to let other with few bucks take the control and the future of your name (especially the really expensive ones)

Excellent point Dotnom! Never even considered that thought - but that would be a huge risk to take into account.

I suppose maybe there could be an honor system setup similar to ebay or something - where renters have to go through an application/screening and have a certain "feedback" rating or "credit" status to be allowed to rent a domain.

Wouldn't hurt if they were required to make a significant "security deposit" in order to offset some of the potential risk.

I know that eventually someone is going to put this together and it will be a real, tangible, viable way of doing business online in the future. Might take 5-10 years .... but i believe we will see the day sooner rather than later.

Well only if there is a setup from the ground up (whois-ownership system) to allow you check who is the owner and who is the one who rents the name

Otherwise i don't think will be possible even in 5-10 years
Domains are build for usage and not for renting-reselling
I believe ICANN also doesn't like the domaining system (part of the reasons for the TLDs release)

Renting/leasing names does occur and has for a lot of years. It's just that it is usually not a very popular options for a number of reasons such as cost & control - not only the actual $$$ but the ultimate cost of developing & branding something you don't own in the end.

It can be pulled out from underneath you at the end of the contract period then sold/leased/rented to your competitor (always have an option to buy at the end of the contract or at least the right of first refusal). Your competitor then reaps all the benefit of the time, effort & $$ you put in to its development.

Hopefully they will at least send you some candy & flowers for being nice enough to create a "turnkey" site/destination and sending your customers their way...

actually i just rent out my domain but is not the full domain (sub), yesterday i purchase mk1.asia and i told my mr2 club friend about the domain i purchase, then kind of interested on it but i'm also interested in this domain (cause i rebuilding my VW mk1), so we come out a solution by adding mr2.mk1.asia for them and i create vw.mk1.asia also .... :)

can this consider domain renting ????

Interesting concept but do you transfer the domain or just let them use it? And what about misuse where the domain is blacklisted? Then you're sunk, eh?

i would rather rent out ad space on my websites and they come in as advertisers or sponsors and I would rather sell the domain or the entire websites instead of renting.
