Domain Registration Process...

Hi -

I know we have all bought domain names once or twice in our life, but I have a really really wierd question that it took me a while to think about:

How does the process of domain registration begin? There are so many re-sellers of domain names, there has to be someone out there who can be able to register domain names for free. Like I think of it as a Family Tree, it keeps getting split up into forked branches, but someone at the VERY top has to be able to do it for free...

ERR I'm CONFUSED!!! HELP ME!!!

If is was all free, how would they fund the admin / staff / whois servers / dispute management / etc?
