I think it's because many newcomers believe the same keywords that were valuable in dot-com will also hold their weight in .gtld, for example the "domain" keyword. I agree with you, little value. The rules are different for G's.
I'm already seeing people registering typos and brandables with .gtld's, it's silly really. Even acronyms like "vr", "iot" and "ai" etc you have to be careful with. If your investments are struggling in ccTLD and dot-com extensions, they likely will not fare any better with a new G extension either.
