So I'm pretty new to this whole domain name business, although have been into web design for around 8 years. I'm wanting to start some kind of pet related site, and am curious on whether this is a decent domain name for such a site:
PetHorizon.com
or should I browse the web for a better name?

Think it's a pretty good name. Lots of room for development. What is your site going to market about pets? Infomation or products etc?

as this is a hobby for me, nothing profitable :)

I was thinking some sort of CMS based website, something bubbly/colourful. Users could login, upload pictures of their pets, leave comments on other pictures, chat in forums etc, like a community site, but with some fun elements.

It depends on your goals for the site. If the site is just a hobby with no profit motive, acquiring a quality domain might be less important. The development pros can often take a so-so domain and still get traffic to a site via backlinks, advertising and hundreds of pages of content. But I doubt many individuals looking for pet info would type in that phrase into a web browser. I also believe you could find better choices in the aftermarket (SEDO/Afternic/Namepros domains wanted section)for branding purposes and which might even have type-in traffic. Often by going with an alternative extension domain and using Google Adwords' keyword tool you can find phrases which are searched for and yet the domain in .net or another extension is available. The search engines do give preference to an exact match domain though it is still only one factor in search engine positioning. Best of luck.

what sort of domain would you be talking about garptrader? I don't have a high budget :(

The site is just a hobby, do you think "Pet Horizon" is a decent name?
on searching, isn't it meta tags that make the difference? :o do people really type in a domain when searching instead of using a search engine still (eg: typing recipes.com into the URL box instead of searching recipes on google) ?

thanks for the responses by the way guys :)
