Domain Name Expiry Time Of Day

I was wondering, at what time does a domain name become "registerable" again?

I have never even ventured into the world of domains, but I was just wondering how this works.

The WHOIS sites have information such as when a registered domain name will expire, but they only have the date of expiry.

I am interested in a specific domain name, and I know on what date it will expire, but is there a way to ensure that it will be purchased when it is free? I don't want to wait all this time only to find out that it has been bought by somebody else. I'm assuming that the current domain name holder does not renew his domain.

Does it happen at any specific time (i.e. 12:00 am of that date or 11:59 pm of that date) or do you just have to keep "refreshing" until it shows up as "not registered"?

Or, are there any tools (free, preferably) that will reserve/alert me when it is free?

It is a relatively popular domain name (assuming that all 3 letter .com names are considered "popular") but the letters don't really have any significance (somewhat random) to anyone other than me, the current owner of the domain name, and those random 3-letter-domain-name holders hehe.

Thanks.

First and foremost, if it is infact a LLL.com - there is a 99.99% chance it will drop to an auction house (Snap, Pool, Enoms Club Drop, or TDNAM). So, first check the registrar to see what they do when domains expire. Even if it is not a registrar that automatically gives their domain names to an auction house upon expiry, odds are, one of those services above will win it when it does become available.

I believe the correct time of day is 3:00pm EST for .com and .net - I would also believe that if this domain name is decent letters (regardless of what it could stand for) expect the domain to sell for $9,000 +

Ah, I see.

The wanted domain name is registered with Network Solutions, so I have no chance of getting it (with a limited, expecting-to-pay-$10-a-year budget) right?

Thanks for the info.

Definitely not. If you're looking at acquiring an LLL.com domain at auction (which it will go to) you're looking at $xxxx.

Actually, your looking at $X,XXX MINIMUM and we know its going to go to SnapNames, which means youll compete with Bonkers and a few others. If its decent lettering... LOTS MORE.

Domains that expire with Network Solutions don't drop normally. Well they do, but first they go to SnapNames to be auctioned. Only if nobody else backorders the domain will it drop to the public. It's $60 minimum at SnapNames.

My bad, one too few X's, changing my original post now. It depends on the exact domain, but you're looking at at least mid $xxxx.
