I think the domain market is too crowded, yet I still love it. (Because it makes the domains more valuable - generally)

At least the stock market has unlimited shares for sale :) Domains aren't like that ;)

What do you think? And do you approve of it?

Cheers,
-Matt

It's only gonna get worse. The only way to get ahead is to do some mad research and get them before someone else does. :)

Ah, it may get worse, but consider this:

Companies and major events take place when otherwise people would not reg the names, for example, before Apple's iPod came out or was announced, nobody would have registered ANY names with "ipod" in it because it wouldn't mean anything.

As new things happen and products announced, etc, domains will have new possibilities :)

compared to the number of internet users as a whole, those who are actually "domain resellers" are a small percentage!

the thirst for more info/products/services/data, creates demand for more websites to fullfill that thirst.

this thirst never gets quenched! (sours) :)

........

the resellers capitalize!

Crowded? Yes if you count all the "part-time" resellers.

Is it a bad thing? No

It all depends on how do you define a "domain reseller".

I would not consider people who are not active in the domain market are domain resellers. Some are hurry to sell names at cost or loss when it comes to spend a couple of dollars to renew them.

In other words, there are not to many professional domain resellers out there but there are a lot of amateur resellers.

Just my 2 cents.

not too crowded IMO, but more people just means more people to sell to. and less domains so more value in premium domains. Maybe it seems like it because of these forums where everyone is a domainer, but say there were no domain name forums, would it seem as crowded?

The market is crowded with alot of people merely lookin to make money off domain names more than for the true pleasure of developing a name into a website,or simply purchasing a name because they just want the name without resell in mind when they purchase it.So i think there are groups of domainers. The domainer who enjoys and gets pleasure from just owning thier domain names=Me,The ones who go to the register with $$$$ signs of what a name may be worth and how fast they cash in on it.And then the well educated domainers who develope, sell and buy and perhaps make a complete living domaining.Never the less. The market will always be over crowded,But there are plenty of excellent names to go around,I think the most effected by the crowded market are those who simply reg a name for cash in return.

I think it is crowded! Most lose money in this market while only few people earn big money!

Shortage of anything causes prices to go up. The more traders therer are, the less choices are available at reg fee. As a somewhat seasoned trader, I welcome the newbies that register hundreds of names and ask 6 figures for them. It makes it easier for me to sell the alternative to their overpriced and unavailable domain at good but not outrageous prices. When they overextend themselves, it also keeps a fresh supply of new inventory in the dropped domain market. Sometimes competition can be used stategically.

Not always the case. Most ccTLD are well accepted on their respective countries, good example are .us .de .uk .se .tv .nu .cn .in etc. There will be no shortage in domain names because ICANN continue to create new extension soon .xxx will be in the market to join the crowded domain names market.

In another 10-20 years these ccTLD will level to .com .net .org. If that happen, your precious .com .net and .org will just a few dollars to sell.

So enjoy while still hot.

My 2 cents.

well that would be a long time to enjoy and I like .se and Love .tv but they will never be to .com and I am no .commie but that logic I disagree with 100 % and who knows what 20 years will hold as far as the whole tld landscape.

Johnn I think you make a good point there are not a lot of professional domainers a lot of Lottery ticket Buyers. IMO

it will become more and more crowded proportional to new domain extensions made available :) Hence, more and more people will get internet access, more and more people will want a domain name or website..

There are a limited number of shares in any market. This is fundamental to the workings of any market.

I think the domain market is relatively crowded. To say โ€œtoo crowdedโ€ we would have to define what it is too crowded for. Too crowded to register a 3 letter .com, sure. Too crowded for someone who knows what they are doing to start with an empty portfolio and make good money within 24 months, no way.

I think it's clear that if the market continues the way it is going we will have another crash. But is this a bad thing? Personally I look forward to paying regfee for some great names a few years down the road and telling them for 100,000% profit a few years later. Just like last time.
