Dear Namepros,

The team at Epik is exploring the development of a project that aims to shift the painful domain name expiration process into a more profitable experience for domainers. Perhaps you have read my opinions about registrars selling expired domains and refusing to help registrants in recovery. The time to disrupt this with action has come!

In the meantime, since joining Epik last month, I decided to do something about it with the help of some amazing engineers. The goal of this "name liquidate" idea is to sell domains directly to buyers that may otherwise wait to acquire these domains at expired auctions or being filled as registrar backorders which pays zero to the registrant.

The planned solution addresses two domainer pain points,
1. Liquidation of expiring inventory brings much needed capital, meaning you can renew more of your portfolio.
2. Buyers get clear title and dont waste time bidding on names that can be recovered post-expiry.

Here is the process,
1. Submit your domains: you unlock your domains, provide auth codes.
2. Seller acknowledges that a fast-transfer of the domain will occur once domain has a bid.
3. Bidders agree to non-revocable change of ownership if their bid prevails.
4. Sellers receive a large portion (80%?) of auction proceeds.

The process begins with a 7 day reverse auction counting down hourly/daily, down to $1 plus renewal/transfer for delivery. The domain doesn't have to be expired or expiring. You can submit the name multiple times during the life of the name but not more than once per year. Once the auth code is verified:
• Epik parks the domain with auction template with Make Offer pricing so retail bids can come in.
• Wholesale buyers are informed of expired auction inventory update.
• Domain goes through reverse auction in 7 days
• Domains are fast transferred to Epik as soon as one bid is made.
• If seller locks name, all domains will be removed and no further listings will be accepted from seller.
• Domains already at Epik are pre-qualified for "name liquidate" services, but you must opt in manually.
• External domains are eligible once auth codes are verified.
• Data will include number of views, expiration date, and expected delivery.
• Pre-set domain buys will give you the ability to buy any name when a price hits a certain target.
• Once a bid is submitted, it cannot be revoked. All purchases a final non-refundable.
As for brand name, we are considering NameLiquidate.com — very descriptive name and targeted at a very specific audience. That said, open to considering other names. A separate brand naming project is coming shortly for what Rob describes as the “Ultimate Digital Brand Marketplace”. This is separate.

Which reminds me -- how would folks like it if we made it easy to send a message to a seller?
I would also like to see a way to list a domain on NameLiquidste via the Epik API. Not to mention just more market related API calls to have more control over that via the API.

That is a good idea there about NameLiquidate API call so you can programatically send your expiry stream at any registrar to the auction. We'll check it. Should not be hard.

I don't think the thread starter was asking about "escrow" or domain loans.

I just checked out your site again, it's still not ready for prime time. Still no filters. I'm only interested in .com, don't want to rummage thru the other names. Still no FAQ or anything on the main page. I have to click Buy Now, going to the next page to see how it all works. Then again, buyers.

Will get that FAQ published this week. I had a rough draft but nothing extensive covering the newest additions.

You can in fact search .com or whatever extension to delimit results per TLD. It's a very rough version of what we have planned.

Have some questions about NameLiquidate. I looked in the KB for info and got some info on the NameLiquidate page but was still wondering about these questions:

- do you have to have your names registered at Epik to participate?
- what happens when a domain name doesnt sell, does it go back to you?
- is there a way to "watch" a domain or set a reminder?

Thanks! :)

1. No. If it is not with Epik you will have to unlock it and provide the auth code though. It will then transfer to the buyer if its sold. I bought one that way and had to pay the purchase price and transfer cost.

2. You keep the domain name until it sells. So nothing happens if it dosent sell.

3. Not yet, I think the will be adding that soon. In the meantime I have been just making bookmarks of domains I am interested in, which is odd because I never use bookmarks.

That would be useful to ask for their social handles for that name.
Thanks for continuing to add more features to this.

From a UX perspective, the "Buy Now" and "Bid Now" buttons have very similar text content. Something like "Buy Now" and "Place Bid" would establish the difference more clearly. Also font weight 500 helps them blend more with the rest of the page. :)

In NameLiquidate environment - what for? It is "take it or leave it". What things can nameliquidate buyers discuss with nameliquidate sellers? With a low liquidation price, it is not worth manual processing for the seller - which includes spending time on writing responses. Imho.

Bid now buttons are live indeed. I'd still consider those as an experiment. Why? Because we do not know whether folks will now enter their highest amounts in these yellow fields (more $$$$ to sellers or to the "house") or their lowest amounts (less $$$$ to sellers and to the "house"). Only time will tell! Since we now have a mix of a Dutch Auction and Sealed Bid Auction, the outcome is not obvious...

You only get 1 shot, someone bids higher you cant change your bid so it encourages entering your highest number.

I also hope so :) But, what if all bids will be $9 - placed "just in case"? I probably would bid more though if I like the domain...
And the next step: downloadable lists. Please! It is not easy to check domains even now (355 liquidation domains). And what if it becomes thousands? Someday it should :)

Thanks guys.

Filters and downloadable lists coming soon -- it did not make the cut for NamesCon but a lot of stuff is coming online today across the Epik ecosystem. I think it is the biggest release day in the history of Epik.

@vitigo - Fast track on filters and downloadable lists for NameLiquidate.

@Rob Monster one note, it seems the bid button is only on the list view and is not shown when you click into a specific name.

That UX update should be live tomorrow on the domain detail page.

Engineer teams are rolling out several big upgrades today across many product areas. You can see 2 new Navigation items now in the top-Nav right below the Escrow dashboard. The last one is a direct link to the NameLiquidate Bid Manager where you can follow your bids and adjust as needed.

One thing I don't love about our current implementation is this:

After you submit a bid it takes you to the Bid Manager. I actually would prefer it if you were kept on the same page so you can rapid-fire submit bids.

I am guessing others will agree on that one. Have a look:

https://nameliquidate.com/

Postscript: Engineers confirm that this issue is fixed tomorrow so you stay on the page and can rapid-fire submit bids. That will be pretty efficient. Look out for that!

Pre-bids are going to be humming on all cylinders this week. Game-changer for NameLiquidate.

Great to see pre-bidding finally available. I would say that's guaranteed to improve finally sales prices.
So, is $9 once again the official minimum? For a while it was $1. I know there was a fair bit of talk about that from some people. Personally I think $9 is too high. I have seen lots of names I would bid maybe $1 - $5 on, but not $9. To me this means there are a fair few names which won't get bids (but with a lower minimum they would have). If you don't want to go to $1 maybe you could consider $3 (or $5 at the absolute highest). Though I think the lower, the better. With the release of pre-bidding it will still maximise the sale prices, so I don't think a lower minimum is a negative step, and it should ensure a higher sell-through rate.

We'll eventually let the users set the reserve but the default is now set to $9. NameLiquidate is going to be the place for the bargains so the max reserve would need to be under $100. If someone has a distress sale for a 3L.com, that should be done in a different venue.

VERY pleased to see a reserve option becoming available...even if it has a cap imposed by the system. At 9 I would be hesitant for some of my better 'maybe drops' to go thru the process but with a little higher reserve I am far more likely to put some names in. At any number below 9 my names would just be allowed to drop into the wild. Thanks for the innovations...it will take some epic Epik study to get the full use of the new features. (see what I did there...I crack me up!)

reasonable reserve option available = very very good opportunity to increase the sale of more domains on name liquidate.
As soon as available I think I will try.

Thanks for considering a reserve. I would think of it as a "bottom" or "floor" on a declining auction. Do you remember the very old Afternic "Bazaar"? I acquired a bunch of domains using that way back in 2003 or so. Name Liquidate sort of reminds me of that. Thanks for always being so prompt and attentive!

Hi,

Lists are already downloadable, enjoy it.
Filters are still in process.
