Domain Email Address For Whois

I have just set up a domain email address through my domain registrar account; I have used a domain that I intend to keep, and for safety reasons, I have enabled the automatic renewal of the domain (the rest of my domains are manual renew).

This email address would be solely for my Whois information (I would not be giving it out to friends, family, or businesses), and I would be checking it every time I log into my registrar account.

Right now I'm using a freebie commericial address for my whois info, which I hear is not a good idea.

At least with a domain email address, any hackers would have to first get into my registrar account, which has a very strong password enabled.

My question:

What are the pros and cons of using a domain-based email account for Whois?

Some of you may have had negative experiences with this, and I really would like to know before I go full-steam ahead and change my Whois email.

Thanks!

Some pros:

1. More control.

2. Possibly more security, depending on your email service provider.

3. Support in case issues occur.

Some cons:

1. Opposite of number 2 above, again depending on them and if the script for
creating the email service might have a vulnerability somewhere.

2. Email access might be disabled if the parent domain itself is suspended for
whatever reason by the registrar.

Mileage varies.

Thanks, Dave Zan.

#1 (con): I would be using an email provided free by the registrar (GoDaddy).

I don't think #2 (con) will be an issue because I'm using the domain just for email and a redirect to a non-controversial site. Of course, nothing is ever 100%.

Again, thanks

pros for me:
1. branding
2. you are known by your domain not by yahoo or via gmail

cons:
1. you have to allot time to check it since you will be using it as a separate email.

If you want extra security, setup email forwarding on the email listed in the whois and have it forward all mail to a second email address which you haven't shared with anyone. Use the second email address as your main communication with registrars so that if someone ever brute forces your first email they won't be able to do anything with it (eg. attempt to recover your password).
