Domain age vs WHOIS/IP History

Could anybody shed some light on the difference between domain age and whois history?

There are domains registered back in 2000 according to the whois records however when checking the age it shows only a couple of days/months.

Really confused.

Domain age is simply the length of time a domain has been registered without being dropped.

Whois history is a record of a domains registrations, drops, etc. This includes the current domain age, but also includes all activity since the domains first creation.

So when evaluating a domain age we take into consideration the whois records rather than the length of time a domain has been registered without being dropped.
