Someone, probably accidently typed your domain name on a popular blog or website got traffic then it got buried. I had that happen once, luckily it was quality traffic and earned 35 euros in clicks in a space of 4 hours

Excellent comment raredn. If nobody else has said this yet: Welcome!

It sounds like you have been around awhile. Yes, this happens all the time. A mention on a radio show is also very dramatic, and the traffic skyrockets and then drops back. Frequently you will see an increase in the baseline traffic after a burst since new users discover your site and become regulars (if it is a real site)

Smash: sometimes you can track down the blog/site/radio, sometimes not, but it is fun while it lasts. There may be other reasons, but I think raredn captured a major source of this activity in their post.

I can't imagine that they do that, wouldn't that be illegal in some way?

Thankyou for the welcome Marc! Yes If I had an established website on that particular domain name would have been a fantastic traffic boost, (domain name Fofoo.com)

Illegal??? Raredn mentioned that perhaps somebody *accidentally* may have typed in a url into a blog that then got buried... and I mentioned that was an excellent take on it... and suggested it may have been from a radio show... perhaps the listener didn't hear correctly or the radio host messed up.

Even flakier stuff happens with traffic spikes. A while back I got a huge boost and a ton of complaint mail when a plane wrote my url in the sky (sky writing) during a big public event. Another time I got a bunch of traffic from helium balloons that came down with my url... that latter one upset ME too, since it creates an ecological mess. Sometimes you never know who is plugging your site.
