Does Dynadot Drop Catch for themselves

Hey everyone,

In the past few days, a couple of the names I've had my eye on were taken right when they dropped and the whois says "Dynadot Staff". I originally thought that a client was using their API and the whois had privacy or "Dynadot Staff" is the default when using their API until you updated it.

I'm now wondering if Dynadot is drop catching names for themselves and maybe has been doing so for awhile? If that's the case, I guess their API is pointless since they'll always be able to get the name before you do (if you only use their API).

As far as I know that's just connectivity issue. If one checks the whois for such names few days later, one should find contact details of someone's else, not Dynadot's. I.e. that doesn't mean that Dynadot dropcatches names for themselves.

It means that Dynadot had multiple backorders on the domain they caught and it's currently in auction.

The "Dynadot Staff" account just appears to be the account they hold it in until the auction is over and pushed to the new owner's account.

Yup billp3 is right if you see Dynadot Staff on whois it's currently in the auction as there were multiple backorders for it (so new domain user usually appears in 3-4 days), but it can also happen if you catch them yourself and sometimes the error might occur if you placed order for the same domain in the short amount of time, but they sort it out manually and add it to your account.

It's because of what others have mentioned. I've been told by dynadot before that they do no drop catching for themselves.

Thanks for the responses! I didn't realize that Dynadot had a backorder service for drops. They offer an API so that would be logical that they have a drop service as well. Thanks for the confirmation!
