Does BuyDomains own 487,055 domains or is it just how many domains they host/own,

Those measurements are taken by the number of domains using their DNS servers. Many are theirs for sale, some are hosting they do, Others may be portfolios they manage for others. I have one regular customer who transfers most all his domains to buydomains after purchase where they consolidate his portfolio and manage his DNS.

Their front page indicates they have 400,000+ domains for sale, leaving the other 15% probably as hosted ones.
