When do registers actually drop a name? (Release for re-reg)
Are they required to do it at a certain time?

I am asking about the actual moment that it would be made availabe to re-register.

Actually names drop at the time they were registered or at the reg's discretion as i.asia said.

.com and .net domains normally follow a specific delete cycle, however a registrar can renew the domain themselves in hope that the owner will renew. And there is no time limit to how long they can continue to do so. You can find many names that this has been done on that have been registrar hold for 6-8 months.

DropTime is 2pm Eastern for .com and .net on the 6th day after a domain enters Pending Delete status.

Yikes.

I'm awaiting for one a .com domain of mine to become available to re-registar again. I just keep checking up on it so that I can make sure I get it.
