An article I wrote over at TeenDomainer.com,

I think it is really important to protect your name and your brand. Yes I do own Brian Diener .com. I apologize to those of you with very common names.

Do you own yourname.com? Some people cringe at the extra registration fee every year, but not owning youname.com could end up costing you much more than the $10.00 a year.

Not only is yourname.com a great place to showcase a portfolio of your work and websites, it is unique to you. It is perfect to have a small personal blog with a about me page. This could be very important when you are looked at to be hired for a job. You could put a great resume on the site. It does not matter what profession you are in, you will always be identified by your name.

When people go to look at someone today they go to Google. They type in your name and click on the first result that comes up. You want the first result to be owned by you so that you can control what it says.

Do you own your name.com why or why not?

3. if you drop it, someone could reg and set a catch all email and if you have valuable informations like username and password before that were linked to that email chance are they will hack your members area or other things.

That can happen with ANY domain you use, not necessarily your name domain. It could also happen with gmail, hotmail, yahoomail, etc. that someone will pick up the address in the future if you abandon it, and assume your former identity. Years after I left AOL, someone got my old AOL email address. I would think you would be less likely to abandon or forget to renew your own name than any other. You would also likely have slightly better odds of getting it back if stolen, since it is YOUR name. Since it's not generic, there is also less chance of someone else wanting it or having a legitimate use for it if dropped unless you are a celebrity. The most likely pickup would be someone else with the exact name, who probably doesn't have bad intent. If they did, they would be very likely to be caught, since it reveals there name.

Last name's way too common, and the pair matches an actor and a couple of other 'well placed' folks, so they were unavailable in all domains (I could have registered .us but didn't, and its gone now). I do own first initial last name in .net and .us (for regfee, but .com was gone), but haven't put them to use yet.

Less than the price of a fancy coffee

I picked up my first and last (.com) for $1.99. Too cheap to resist.

I tried to register myname.com and myfirstlastname.com domains but they were already registered before. I think it's because my name is a very common one.

Yep some people have no luck for this, like john smith 419000 in google with quotes.
but almost everyones first name are already reg if it s common, so last name or fistandlast is only the possibility maybe not in .com but othe tlds like .tel, .me,...
