An article I wrote over at TeenDomainer.com,

I think it is really important to protect your name and your brand. Yes I do own Brian Diener .com. I apologize to those of you with very common names.

Do you own yourname.com? Some people cringe at the extra registration fee every year, but not owning youname.com could end up costing you much more than the $10.00 a year.

Not only is yourname.com a great place to showcase a portfolio of your work and websites, it is unique to you. It is perfect to have a small personal blog with a about me page. This could be very important when you are looked at to be hired for a job. You could put a great resume on the site. It does not matter what profession you are in, you will always be identified by your name.

When people go to look at someone today they go to Google. They type in your name and click on the first result that comes up. You want the first result to be owned by you so that you can control what it says.

Do you own your name.com why or why not?

I own Galel.com (which I need to begin writing on regularly :|) as well as my FirstLastname.com

When my son was cooking in my wife's uterus, I regged his FirstLastname.com.

Protect your personal brand!

Some good points there, I also think that it is very important to own your names. I would want to own my last name but because it is so popular it would cost a lot to aquire.

No I don't own my name in the dot com. Quite frankly that is a marketing tactic drummed up by the registrars to dupe their customers out of a few extra bucks at the checkout. Do you know why virtually every store has candy and soda at the registers. Why would an office supply store be selling pepsi? Its because enough fools fall for it that they turn a profit.

Unless your name is apple you are probably better off finding a good short brandable domain to represent your online presence. Its just my opinion, but [email protected] doesn't present a very professional business image at all. Rather it seems kind of tacky.

I think that in some cases "firstNameLastname.com a great tool. But not everyone wants to brand themselves. Some people would prefer keeping a lower profile & using a brandable or whatnot.

For a long time I have contemplated the benefits. I have yet to act on it.

I guess it all depends on what you are trying to do. But some folks do not want to be "famous" or "well known" by name.

Even if you don't use it, regging it to stop someone else from using it is a good idea for $8/year IMO.

Just owning it to prevent any one else having it is worth the cost. If $8-$10 a year is too much for that peace of mind, then I can assume you don't care about it.

I have owned my surname.com since 1999 along with my most ofter used internet moniker in the .com. I love using [email protected] especially [email protected]. My GivenSurname.com was available last time I bought something at GD but I see no real benefit from owning it. I used to use surname.com as an experimental/play place but now it is mostly for routing email which allows me to define and throw away email addresses.

I not only own my firstnamelastname.com, I own the same for my wife and kids. My own firstnamelastname.com is the same as some others such as a lawyer who ran for congress, a professional magician, and a college professor, so If I didn't have it I probably would never get it.

I also own my lastname.us which I use for my family personal email like [email protected]. I also have several variations of my family firstnames.TLD in non dotcom extensions.

I have my in-laws lastname.com which I used to give them great vanity email addresses for Christmas a few years ago, for which I pay the renewal and hosting costs.
