Well you could do the 100 year registration at Network Solutions if the 10 isn't long enough. That should cover the rest of your life. It's only $999 but if NS goes under, then you're pretty much crappy out of luck.

ya ive seen 100 years, but in my mind its a waste of money for two reasons:
1.The company will probably gone within the next 20 years and
2.Why waste money when at your guys age you wont even be alive for 100 more years

lol yah 100 years is along time, prolly 25 years from now a reg fee may only be 25 cents, heh

Well every name will have to be renewed at some point. There's no such thing as buying a name outright and owning it without having to renew it sometime.

not true.... My girlfriend ownes two domains which shes had for many years. She wont lose the ownership until she pass away, which hopefully will be when shes very old...... She paid one lump sum for the domains & only have to pay to have it hosted, which she can do anywhere she wants to.

How did she manage that?

The only way I've heard of that is through the Network Solutions 100 year deal (which actually only registers it for 10 years and then they renew it for another 10 years when it is about to expire).

I don't think there is any way to "buy out" a domain name.

She doesn't own the domain names, all domains are leased, its impossible to actually purchase outright a domain name. If she doesn't pay yearly for a domain it means that the company she bought it from is paying the yearly renewal fee. But trust me, SOMEONE is paying the yearly fee, you can't get around it. And if that company that she bought it from ever goes under, then she would have to start paying the fee herself.

Thread moved from "fixed prices" to "Domain discussion". Thanks. :)

Indeed, domains are leased and not owned. Personally I wouldn't trust anyone who is telling you that you can purchase a domain to own it.

Since your with GoDaddy just set that domain to automatically renew than you don't ever have to worry about it expiring.

If you use that option, make sure the credit card is updated and still in good
standing, of course. Then you don't ever have to worry about it expiring. :)

Just to add on to what everyone else here has said, it's true you can't buy it
outright because managing a domain name is a very expensive and technically
challenging venture. Can you imagine how much you're going to spend just to
keep the hardware in good shape, continually update virus definitions, make
connections to the Registry of the domain extension, etc.?

If you're not willing to go thru all those headaches, be glad those registrars
spend a lot of time and money doing the actual hardwork and lease you the
right to use the name for a year up to 10 years for $7-9 per year, on the
average. :D
