For the history, Dan - starter of DNF - backed off on a sales deal with 3 mods of DNF at that time, opting to sell DNF to Greg for more money. The 3 amigos then left and started DomainState.com. I had started DomainGator.com a couple of weeks prior. When RJ launched NamePros I was too busy to remain involved and mass emailed all DG members to hop here on NamePros. Later on, Greg sold DNF to Adam and that's the story. I believe it was Greg who banned the reference to all "competitor" forums and although at some point the word "NamePros" was unblocked at DNF somehow it went back to being blocked, perhaps as the result of a filter reset when updating to a new version of vBulletin.

Also, something to keep in mind is that it's threads such as this that make hackers proud of their twisted endeavors. They do it simply for attention and for the bragging rights, and threads like this with 9 pages in less than one day only encourage them to continue this shit. Believe me, they read this stuff and are quite proud to be the center of such attention. There have been countless cases where someone gets pissed off at something that happened to them, and their way of getting revenge is to make others suffer as they have suffered. There are many murder cases where the only motive is to give others a taste of what they went through, and this can be applied to hackers as well. This fellow seems to have been angered when he was reported, and will likely continue this for as long as he can go unpunished and keeps receiving this sort of attention. Hackers delight in our anger at them, as it's all they are looking for.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that we domainers are warned about possible security threats associated with these breaches, but perhaps it should end there? Not my call, but I believe that it's something to consider. :talk:

This is a quote from another forum: "when I clicked on a link from email for DNF my computer went nuts I quickly shut down and norton said i had 4 problems with my computer which i cleared up, i dont no if the problems were related to the site being down or not"

I would advise against opening any emails from DNF. In fact I would delete them. For all of you who use auto - login especially change your passwords. Be careful changing your passwords, if your email is compromised he will have access to your password change notifications. There may be some spoof emails now that he has access to all the emails.

I feel sorry for DNF.

As a fellow forum owner I know the stress that he was under and I like the fact that other forum owners are supporting him in his endeavours.

Everyday we forum owners risk being hacked, it part of the job some will say. It’s never a safe job we under take to start a forum. We can only try to limit the risks. Even thought my forum is not related to DNF we can learn from it.

I have been hacked myself and its hard, especially when you have to try and fix the problem and find out how it happened. I think Adam needs time to look at it without us emailing, pm’ing or calling him

My forum sends it sympathies to DNF

Because MD5 can be cracked.

Wouldn't be that simple for vBulletin, they add a few extra words such as a site key I think its normally called to the hash, so your password has is normally something like yourpassword-qbnur83vyn39nyv37t before its hashed.

Wow, my thoughts go out to everyone at DNF, as I personally know how bad it is when your site is hacked. While I am not a huge fan of DNF, I have a lot of respect for Adam, and what he has accomplished there. Hackers are the scum of the Earth IMHO, and I really wish that there was an international law that would be able to punish these scumbags. Best of luck to DNF in restoring the site! :tu:

I'd like to point out that useing the word "hackers" in this context is disrespectful to the real hackers from 10-20 years ago. I know you mean well, but this is more like the street gangs v.s. the Mob.

Well, the hacker is rumoured to have placed certain conditions to be met before the site is returned back including being made a mod/admin there! This is really bad news...

So you are saying that the hack/crack/jack is "negotiating" the terms of the site's surrender?

That's amazing.

DNF's still down for me. It'll take a while.

I certainly hope Adam's made backups of his backups of his backups. Belt and
suspenders, people.

My apologies, you are absolutely correct. Poor choice of words on my part...

if it was on Adam's server, I doupt that there was any need for any "negotiating", as all Adam would have to do is reformat the server.

Why is everybody thinking the hijacker is a 16 year old Iranian? Because he told so???

Also, can this thread be related to this hijack?

I certainly hope Adam has an off-server backup. Nothing worse than a sysadmin that doesn't back up to a secondary server.

Will be interesting to see the outcome of this, DNF may lose alot of members over this ... as well as alot of money.
