I've had a little luck without using *all* the right research tools. Most people seem to think Google and OVT (with or without extension) Key Word Suggestion Tool are the 2 best resources to research possible domain names.
My questions are about the analysis of those results:
1) What is a good Overture number (without extension)
2) What is a good Google number, or more precisely (sic) what is a good range of results for Google?
3) How do these numbers tie in?

Are the following numbers good?
2500 searches on OVT ; 50,000 results on Google
65,000 searches on OVT; 1,900,000 results on Google

Are there better analytical tools to be using, or tools that can tie these numbers together? :?

ok I was going to create a long post for members here aiming to make better educated guesses.. but I guess will take an attempt to give you my insight

It largely depends on what you're after.. and what I mean by that is:

(1) Develop website - name doesn't matter per se as the development adds value
(2) Reselle website - name is important need latest trends and paying attention on "hot" keywords
(3) Typo website - usually parked, you need to be able to see traffic for major domains then use an anagram tool (or figure out yourself) to find a typo domain
(4) Type-in website - usually parked these are the HARDER to figure out, because it's a combination of catchy/easy to remember and type name PLUS something that had or still has traffic and its owner gave up

Once you've decided what you want, SEO work is an ABSOLUTE must as then you can insert/optimize particular keywords meaning that either drive traffic to your site as it's listed againsts less competition OR ads displayed on your parking page have a HIGHER CTR

Now, tool-wise you need the following (please NOTE I'm not affiliate with programs below):
(1) Domain Checker - I use Domain Name Pro which is I think $60 to register but allows me run thousands of checks and lists info such as traffic rankings, incoming links, availability + ability to check TM against US TM database
(2) WEB CEO Unleasher - SEO software for keyword and site optimization $350 I believe but it also has unique features as to checking keywords against "competition" and listing effective keywords based on KPI (Keyword Performance Indicator)
(3) FORUMS - I can't emphasize enought the use of forums
(4) SNAPNAMES/GODADDY INVESTOR EDGE/POOL.COM/etc - tools allowing you to grab expired domains
(5) Overture/Yahoo Ad / GoogleAD - keywords to give you estimate for density

hope this helps, I'm in a hurry now so not well-structured post I will be posting a big proper article tonight when I get time...

If you find this helpful I'd appreciate some Reputation....

rgds,
SM

Thanks for the info, and tips, rep added!
I'm really having difficulty grasping the relationship between Google results (sites) and Overture keywords (searches returned/not by Google).
These always seemed skewed, that is lots of Google sites, not many searches, or vice versa (well not as much). So, what kind of ration would anyone recommend as a minimun for OVT/Google?

google adsense shows you how much $ advertisers are willing to pay on a keyword
overture shows you results of a keyword search within specific month (i..e not historically or AVG throughout year)...

An effective strategy if you're looking for revenue from minisites, is to find first from adsense a highly paying keyword (drug rehabilitation > $5 vs g** porn $0.01) then go to overture and do search on same keyword or with small variants... then you register a domain and plug-in the high paying ads ;)
