I can purchase a domain name which is DMOZ listed. Is this anything special or just so what?

Thanks for help.

DMOZ listed means that the domain is currently listed in the Open Directory Project. I am an editor there as a matter of fact. The directory itself does not carry as much clout as it use to. It is a volunteer human edited directory owned by AOL. At one time Google use to have a directory of it's own which utilized/mirrored the listings that were in DMOZ.

At this time, the Google directory no longer exists. Google still gives a high PR rating to the directory at dmoz.org and that PR trickles down to the sites listed in it. So the only benefit really is the small PR boost it gives your site in Google search.

I would also be interested to know feedback from experts regarding this topic.

What are the benefits if you have a DMOZ domain and/or site?

In addition, what happens to the DMOZ listing if the site is sold and changed for whatever reason?

Does the DMOZ status stick with the domain in perpetuity? Is this the case in arend's case where there is just the domain left with no site any longer?

Sorry the above comment was posted by snowbird as I was typing these questions.

Thanks

If a DMOZ listed domain is sold for whatever reason and the site is changed, there is a good possibility the domain will be removed from the category it is listed in if an editor catches it. Sites are listed in the directory based on category. If you put up a new site that is no longer suitable for that category, it may be removed.

If you remove the site and park the domain, DMOZ has an automated bot that will detect it and red flag the listing to be looked over again for possible deletion by an editor.

I'm a dmoz editor as well and pretty relentless with culling any 'domain' related shenanigans I find, as far as people repurposing an old domain.

It gets the boot very quickly and I do run a tight ship on the categories I edit.
