Distance To Hosts Servers?

I was just wondering if the physical distance to your host's servers should be a consideration in choosing a web hosting company?

only time you should really consider worrying about distance are applications that require constant streams of data (ie game servers)

pages like websites, downloads and email dont require low latency distances

i have a box in text and i cant tell the difference between downloading mail from there and getting email to home from my work mail server.
